All ready to go(I Think)

Postby Nathaniel » Fri Aug 13, 2010 9:37 pm

I would have posted this yesterday but I had an "accident" and had to go to the ER. I can't use my left hand for a week or so, so give me time to reply if I must, But that is a diiferent story.
I think I have everything set up so anything that I have missed, tell me:
To start I will list the bird room preparations,
-Today I had brown "Stain Master" carpet installed from Lowes, it is suppose to prevent stains, hence the name.
-I got a shop vac for clean-up
-I modified my door to have a plexiglass window and I put those UV stickers on it.
-I bought 3 air filters (good ones)
-I have three, four foot java trees
-I made two of my own training perches (sorry Micheal)
-I bought and installed a "used" freezer/fridge for fresh food and storing pellets(each section is 2x2x2ft)
-and I got rid of all my non-stick items
As for the bird I got all this stuff incredably cheap:
SS Cage, 3 SS bowls, lixit water bottle, 40 various toys, 60 different perches, nail clippers and file, 2lb. cuttlebones, Aviator harness and leash, Cat carrier and perch and bowl, First aid kit, A few swings and boings and nets, Round 20 gallon aquarium w/lots of bubble stones, 3(broken)cameras  , Digital weight scale, extra SS bowls, Lots of Poop-off, An Avian vet, Plasic mats, Birdy backpack, I am starting on a few training props and finally lots of treats.

All the money I saved went to a vet fund.

That is it. Anything I am missing?

Shop Vac!?

You really want to scare the bujeezers out of your new parrot?? And 4trees/40toys/60 perches? Don't think you're going just a little bit over board? You did say you're buying just one parrot?

A bit, but I got 40 toys for the price of 10(75% off), alot of the perches are mostly going on the walls and cealing, and I figure once a month I will wheel my bird out and use the shop vac for an extra clean, I also have a normal vacume and dust buster. I have one tree for sun bathing, one for shade and an extra because of the sale. Yes I am getting only one bird(now). I am thinking about others, but not in depth.

p.s. I got only Three trees. Each tree is four feet tall.
p.s.s. I had a major budget increase since I moved.

60 toys may seem like overkill, but it's not, especially when there are sales, especially for shreddable, destroyable toys. You'll regret not stocking up when you need to go buy for full price. I bought a bunch of birdie pinatas and some other huge parrot toys for 1 dollar, because my manager at my store just wanted to get rid of them for shelf space. I snatched them all up! Stocking up now on things that will last forever is the way to go. I'm so jealous of that sale, haha.

Sounds like you're set!!!! Don't listen to Michael there's no such thing as going overboard! I recently spent $400 on bird toys and perches because they were on sale! They'll last me a while but it was definitely worth it. It's not like they're NOT going to get played with. Plus I put toys on the climbing net, on top the cage, in the cage, on their play gyms... lol.

My suggestions:
-a Get a Grip climbing net (or if you're so inclined, making something just like it). My Cape can spend HOURS on hers. I attach toys to it and she just adore it!
-some "birdie specific" cleaning tools, mine include a birdie sponge, brush (2 sizes), special bird towels (I don't use softener on so they don't have a strong odor), whatever works for you- just designated specially for the birds.

daaang! I better not let my bird see this post or she'll start to think that I've been a very stingy owner  you look very prepared indeed. mind if I ask what the aquarium is for? I can't seem to figure it out =o oh and are cuttlebones necassary? I was under the impression that most birds on a pellet diet do not need vitamin supplements and cuttlebones, though I could be wrong
okay, I tried very hard to think of things you don't already have...

-qwick stop (not sure how to spell this..) just in case his toenail is accidently cut to far when grooming, if you plan to cut his nails yourself. you might already have this in your first aid kit though...

-a clean new spray bottle for bathes? my conure hates to bathe this way but my tiel used to love it, so it varies from bird to bird. just an idea =)

-a smaller cage is very nice to have if you need to board your bird somewhere or even to keep around for emergency situations

nothing urgent of course... looks like you're going to have one very spoiled bird  I'm very envious of those java trees

I just got good luck for all my bad luck recentally. My breeder said that even if they don't need the cuttlebone, all of his birds enjoy chewing on them, so I just grabed the last box of cuttlebones and payed for them. I have qwik-stop inmy first aid kit and the cat carrier and back-pack will act as a small cage. I will go get a spray bottle tomorrow, thank you.

I had the aquarium in storage and I was told that birds enjoy moving objects like bubbles or fish. So I set it up with buble wands all around the edge and put submersable led lights that change acording to the time of day,
-Blue as a nightlight because it is supose to supress hunger, helps with sleep and is calming.
-Red during feeding times because it enocurages appitite.
-Green inbetween because it is supose to help make mood happier and encourages activity.

This is based off of research on humans and it works on my cats and dogs but I am not sure how it will affect parrots. The aquarium has a tight hood and there is no way my bird can get in it. Hope that answers your question.

On top of those four cameras I murdered earlier viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2787 , I went threw two more until one finally work!! I am acually quite good at photography except when I took a picture of one of my two new black koi, a young sturgeon was spooked by the flash and leaped out of the water, hit my face and went back into the depths of the pond taking the camera half way with it  I retrieve the camera but everything was ruined, including the sd card.

I give up, You win Kodak gods I will waste no more on your little life snatchers.

*edit* I just realized that this is my 200th post
