I know a lady who got a macaw because the former owner wanted to trade it for a boat.
The lady had a crappy boat that her husband was no longer using and he took it.

The adds where people are willing to trade their pets for mere objects are amongst the worst I think.

I know, what is up with that? I saw an ad once saying that due to not having enough time to spend with the bird they had to sell it... then the ad stated that they would be willing to trade the bird for a vintage car to work on. But, if you don't have enough time to spend with your bird, how do you have enough time to work on an old car to restore??? :?

I have to say its sad to see these posts and each one of them touches my heart in some way. I know there are things I would love to say to some but in all honesty the way this economy is I can completely understand how some may not be able to care for a loved bird anymore and truly would like to rehome it with the right owner. I was lucky enough to come across Captain Morgans almost one year ago on craigslist. I contacted the very nice man and after talking to him I asked to see him. He was out on a perch out of his cage and the man picked him up and then i picked him up and held him. So I never did get to see how hard it was for him to get out of the cage. I did agree to buy the bird as he did look healthy. I quarantined him for several weeks and he was fine. He definately does bite when he wants to, screams so loud I can hear him all the way down the road. But I love him and I am very happy to have purchased him. I still keep in contact with the original owner and send him videos and pictures which he likes so I know he is happy to see what a good home he went to. Craigs list isnt all bad and I think its nice you want to help someone find a nice owner for the conure!

thank you, and yeah i hope he was able to find a good home for him.
i sure tried but after posting it on 4 forums i had no luck. one lady almost did get him but she was short on funds.
i know there are sooo many cats dogs birds etc on Craigslist, i get sad just reading them all.
if i think i can help in any way i do try. but with 4 dogs of my own (not cat friendly) there is little i can do except try to make a good connection.
i have found a lot of good things and was able to sell a lot of things too on the list, so usually have to surf it everyday.
especially the lost and found, i always want to be aware of anybodys lost pets so i can keep an eye out for it.

Personally, I'd avoid the 'free' pets.

Odds are the pet is ill. Even if it's not, if a person can't afford to buy a pet, so is looking for a 'free' bird, then how can they afford to keep a pet? I also have met several people over the years who won't get a vet for a 'free' animal, because they don't consider it's worth it...after all, it was free so has no intrinsic value. Why put money into it?

There's no guarantee either way of course...but I live by the adage 'if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is too good to be true'.

The other one that really bothers me are the ads by people asking for 'free' pets because they can't afford to buy one...again, if you can't afford to buy one, how can you afford to keep one?

I remember one ad begging for a kitten because the young 5-year old daughter really really 'needed' one. It had to be free of course, because they had no money...but it also had to be friendly, neutered and up to date on all it's shots. They would prefer if it came with a litter box and food too...but if it didn't that was okay.

I'm always weary of free animals as well. Sometimes people use the adoption fee, not as a way to profit, but as a way to guarantee the person interested isn't just looking to collect because it is free/cheap.
This isn't always the case, but I know as someone who used to work in a rescue and someone who has rehomed many animals(that I took in off the street or from poor situtations in order to rehab and rehome), a fee can often be what separates the collectors from the truly interested.
When I see a post from someone who isn't certain of a price or says it is negotiable, I feel like they are more likely to end up giving the bird away to the right person. I can't tell you how many times we ended up refunding the fee to people who we rehomed to. A lot of our contracts had terms in it that if you did X you would get Y amount back, etc.

I know if I were needing to rehome one(or all) of mine for some reason, there would be a very high list fee that would be completely negotiable to the right person. I'd just want to make sure that serious inquiries were all I got. I never foresee needing to rehome mine, but as I've mentioned in other threads... you just never know. Luckily my mom is also a bird person and has many times said she would take any one of mine if I needed them to be elsewhere. And she has birdsat for me when I was having to fumigate my old rental house, but not everyone is lucky enough to have friends or family willing to help out with their pets.

I got two "free" birds - my Meyer's. The people I got them from run a rescue and knew I was going to be able to provide a good home for them and trusted me with their care. But, I do have to say they are my most "problematic" birds, or at least the ones who require more work.

I do have to say though that I didn't look for a free bird - I was quite willing to pay and they knew this but they wanted the money to go to their care. In any case, I helped them as well since they had quite a few birds and by taking the two Meyer's off their hands prior to them getting "work" (as in rehabilitated), I freed up cages for more birds in need. Prior to them coming I had already purchased cages and plenty of toys so they weren't worried in the least bit. The other part of the agreement is that if I can no longer provide care for those two Meyer's, they return to the "rescue" or that I find people I would want to trust them to and get them to contact the "rescue".

However, I do get annoyed with adds where I see people asking for free birds claiming they would rather put the money towards the care but then you click on the person posting the add and realize they are also looking for a free cage and stand and things like that. I also highly doubt that these people would actually bother bringing the bird to the vet. My "favorite" add of that nature was a guy who was looking for a free or "cheap" ($100 or less) parrot of the following species - African Grey, Macaw or Cockatoo - which was under a year old. Now knowing the smallest weaning period for any of those birds is 4 months (AG), this is a totally unreasonable demand. Oh and the bird had to be in perfect feather, have no biting issues or any other issues for that matter.

Oh yes, "free bird" as in the ad, not the bird itself. If the ad says "free bird" whether they are the owners or the ones looking... I'm always very weary of them.

3 of my 5 right now were "free", only 1 is "problematic" for me. That is the wild-caught amazon though, I don't see him being unproblematic and the only real problem is he still acts like a wild bird... so I totally expect that. He doesn't like being touched and doesn't like being bugged, but he is not mean at all and will gladly take food from your hands.
