Sore feet

Postby lightweight » Mon Aug 30, 2010 12:59 pm

I noticed that Bella had a sore on the bottom of her foot about a week ago (after the incident with the conure so possibly related). Any ways, it looks like she has been picking at it. She can still use it fine but wondering if I should take her to the vet or simple at home first aid...

I`m not one to run to the vet...but I am leary of foot injuries. If she gets a bacterial infection in the wound (and they do sit on poopy perches...even if you`re very clean it happens) it could get nasty.

In this case I`d be inclined to at least call the vet and ask about it.

If it`s not from the injury...it could be sign of vitamin deficiency, or an issue with perch dimensions, etc., so you may want someone to help figure out what might have caused it while treating it.

Birds also don`t like the feel of anything on themselves...so maybe the vet will have a water-based antibiotic ointment or something along those lines...

Do you have any abrasive perches? I have read these can cause sores on the feet, and I imagine they could equally well irritate an already sore foot.

Actually we do. Her favourite perch is a pedi perch. I am going to call my vet tomorrow and see if she is comfortable with a Senegal and if not I know of an avian vet not far from here. In the meantime I think I will remove the pedi perch just in case...
