Did some quick research and here is what I found.

Styptic powder causes the vessels to contract further back into the claw and also clots the blood. Not only does styptic powder control the bleeding of over-trimmed nails, it helps prevent bacteria from the surrounding area entering the blood stream. This particular first aid agent is not only useful for accidents while trimming dogs and cats’ nails, but also birds’ beaks. Veterinarians use styptic powder to control bleeding of other external injuries as well.

If that is true and it helps prevent bacteria then I guess it would be best to always use it.

Thank you. See this is what I was asking about. Ok, next time I'll use it even if I think the bleeding will stop on its own. So I guess this means it disinfects as well?

That is my understanding though I'd have to do a bit more research to be sure. I believe it's an antiseptic. If you do a search though you will find lots of conflicting opinions about it so I haven't found an absolute, reliable source of information on it yet. If I can find a good source I will post it here. Maybe birdvet will chime in.

I do believe that it is supposed to be painful though and for that reason, I avoid using it unless absolutely necessary.

Say! Maybe you'd like to video an experiment for us Michael! Just pour some styptic powder on a cut and let us know if it hurts or not!

I considered using it on myself at one point when I had a cut that wouldn't clot. I later went to a pharmacy and tried to buy something like that for humans but they didn't have anything like that. That makes me kind of weary on using it on people since it's not sold in a variant for human use.

Sally Beauty Supply normally carries a styptic powder pencil for men when they get shaving nicks. It's in a pencil form (looks like a piece of chalk) to make application easier.

In case you wanted to use one on yourself while sampling the latest flavor of nutriberries :D

I think styptics are highly astringent and that's why they work. So they probably do burn, at least on skin. No idea if the nail is sensitive in the same way. Kwic Stop brand apparently contains a local anesthetic, based on a brief Google session.
