Parrot's Leg Snatched by Domestic Cat

Postby sam_345 » Sat Sep 18, 2010 10:24 pm

Hello,
My parrot sam, yesterday night was attacked by a Domestic cat. The cat snatched the leg of my parrot and removed it completely from root.
It bleeded for one-two hours.
There is no vet available here. What can I do?

The bleeding has stopped?

I don't think you can do much... The bird can survive with one leg but he will need to get used to having one leg...

How is he? Is he reacting normally? Is he quiet? Eating well?

Did you disinfect it in anyway? How did you treat it?

For future reference, you can use flour to stop the bleeding...

My first question is where is Here? You refer to the cat as Domestic but didn't say it was yours, so I'm wondering how did the cat get into the house and into the cage? What was the circumstances that led to this?

If this is a serious post then I really feel sorry for your bird :(

Friends, Thank you for quick replies.
The bleeding has stopped?
Yes

How is he? Is he reacting normally? Is he quiet? Eating well?

He is acting normally, he is struggling but moving over the cage with one leg and his mouth.
He is quiet. He is eating normally. But I cannot see him struggling. His face is so innocent and merciful.

You refer to the cat as Domestic but didn't say it was yours, so I'm wondering how did the cat get into the house and into the cage? What was the circumstances that led to this?

The terrace door was open in the night. Everyone was sleeping. A cat entered from the terrace and snatched the parrot's leg from its root and threw it apart. The parrot shouted and I woke up and the cat ran away.

I agree! What an awful thing to happen. I'm sure your bird is in shock. Ideally I'd get him to a vet ASAP for antibiotics and any other medication, especially since cat saliva could get in the wound. I would liken a bird having it's leg ripped off to a human having a leg ripped off - exceedingly traumatic physically as well as emotionally.

If there is no vet available, I guess the best you can do is watch your bird, and if he starts to fail, make him as comfortable as possible.

I finally took up to the doctor. He would be taking his care for a few months. My parrot has good will power and he is still trying to walk around the cage with his mouth and legs.
Thank you all for your comments.

birdvet has birds who are amputees. I am sure she can offer you lots of advice if you need it.
