Blood Feather

Postby zazanomore » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:30 pm

So this morning I was cleaning out my cockatiel's cage, and I picked up a feather, a broken blood feather. I don't clip Einstein's (my tiel) wings. But at the ends of the feather there was dried up blood. Is it possible that he might of hurt it some how, and he pulled it out? I checked him over and he isn't bleeding anywhere, and if he was I would put some flour on the spot to clot the bleeding, then take him over to the vet to check everything over. Is this normal? Should I be worrying? I never found a feather with dried blood on the end with any of my other birds before. :(

A) Is the feather broken or completely intact with the quill?
B) Are you certain it is a blood feather? Blood feathers are usually dark blue whereas mature feathers are something between clear and white.

It was intact but I'm pretty sure it was a blood feather because it was dark instead of the clear whitish ones that I sometimes find
