Cockatiel Aggression?

Postby meowingaround » Sun Oct 10, 2010 7:34 pm

Windy and Willow are pearly pied brothers. Both were bought at 12 weeks and both were handfed.

I got Windy as a companion for my store bought female cockatiel who I gave to a friend due to issues with Windy.

Windy gets seriously aggressive with me whenever he's around any other birds. He obsesses

I took in Willow as his human mom was forced to move and has no room at the moment for him, a week ago.

But Windy (my bird) is again aggressive.

I don't mean he is snippy. I mean he lunges at my face, will move on the floor to attack my feet. He doesn't touch me with his beak he makes me bleed, over and over again. He bites through clothes as well *rubs sore spot on chest*

I've been working on this for a year and a half, he's naturally more aggressive than I woulda thought a cockatiel could be anyway. He's cage aggressive mostly.. and as long as his cage isn't high he's better, cool but I have 4 cats.. :o

I don't wanna get rid of my baby, but sorry to say even though he is just a ball of feathers and fluff, when he's diving at me or nipping my feet or otherwise being truly nasty, I am scared of him.. it HURTS

I really dunno what to do.

I see Willow who's just a sweety, and My baby who's like Satans Spawn when he's mad.

I just wanna know if there's any way to teach him that I'm the boss without us both getting hurt :cockatiel:

Train.

I don't have a lot of experience, and I don't know if a bird which is like that as a general personality trait will ever make a cuddly pet, but you could start from scratch and train the bird as if you were going to use him in a bird show... First I'd make sure he has now medical issues. Has he been to a vet recently? Then I'd probably start with hands off target training, and progress to trick training once you can move him around without getting savaged. It would give you a positive way to interact anyway. There is a TON of information on that kind of training on this site. I don't think you can teach him not to attack, what you can do is change the nature of your interactions entirely. It sounds clear that this is not just a passing phase but has been going on for years. When Scooter was furious with us for two days after our last trip, I thought we might be in exactly this boat, but he got over it and is back to his normally sweet, hyperactive, funny self. Had it persisted, I would have gone back to square one and treated him as if he were an entirely untamed bird.

I agree 100%, my Cockatiel bit me so hard my finger was bleeding pretty bad when we first got him. After training him he's at a stage that it would take a lot of effort to get him to bite. Read the sticky post on training/taming. Good luck
