Moving a Senegal

Postby literatecat » Tue Oct 26, 2010 5:03 pm

:senegal:
My husband and I live in Massachusetts and would like to move to New Mexico but our main concern is our Senegal. We were thinking of renting an RV so we can put him and his cage in the RV and secure it.

I'm afraid it would be too long of a drive for him. We were also thinking of moving closer to where we are so the ride would be shorter.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have taken Sheldon on a 4 day road trip and he loved it, I think it depends on the bird. Has your Senegal ever been in a car and does he like it?

I wouldn't recommend leaving him in his cage because it could be dangerous, you can buy a small pet carrier.

You can also travel with birds on an airplane in a carrier in the cabin. I think I'd decide where I wanted to move to first, make sure the bird could come along (a few states have species restrictions) and then I'd figure out HOW to do the move. I don't think you need to plan where you are going to live based on worrying about traveling with your bird! Most babies are shipped from somewhere fairly distant. Even cats can handle long car trips and they travel less well than birds by a long shot, from what I understand.

Having the cage available at night would be great, but I second the notion of using a small carrier during the actual drive.

Take a month to introduce the parrot to the carrier by feeding it all meals there. Progressively increase times. So first might be in and out in 5 minutes while eating a treat inside. After a month, it should be comfortable spending all day in there. Then the move won't be stressful at all. Ideally take him on a few drives/outings in the car along this way.

i moved cross country (VA to AZ) with my sennie. he got about 3 months time to get used to his "apartment cage". It went very well, he loved the little cage. And by that time, he was perfectly fine with being in it all the way through the trip. Just make sure you give them enough time to get used to the cage. ;)
