Christmas Tree and Window Lights

Postby joybaz » Sat Nov 21, 2009 4:45 pm

Hi

This is our first christmas with bobbie and was wondering if it is safe to put up a christmas tree and lights on the windows. He does fly about the house quite a lot. My main concern is can the flashing lights on the window effcet him in any way.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I really don't know but this is a really interesting question. I never thought of this cause

A) My parrot didn't fly until recently
B) I don't put up a tree or decorations.

All I can say is, get a parrot safe tree and hide nuts in it and it would be the merriest parrot christmas ever! :senegal:

I don't have any decorations up because:

a) we don't have the space right now
b) however fun it is to put up, I'll have to take them down and I don't like the extra work involved;

but mostly

c) I have one bird who wouldn't leave all those electrical cords alone. My Red-bellied loves cords and we have to monitor him the few showing now (specially around the computer), I couldn't imagine having a tree and lights up with him. He would be all over the place. And I'm sure the others would be intrigued by the tree and ornaments as well. So until I have a space where I could put a tree up with little parrot intervention, I'll probably pass, just because I'm not sure of the safety levels of everything involved.

Most people who have christmas trees put up some expensive or simply fragile ornaments. The bird might want to go to the tree and start playing on it... or it may not. Also, those trees, from my own experience with christmas decorations, the artificial trees tend to get dusty. I wouldn't let a bird play on one of those cause it's just kinda dirty and they might break an ornament.

I would try to keep the bird away from the room where you put your decorations. If you can't, just supervise the bird when you have it out.

My senegal didn't show any interest in the tree last year but each bird is different.

I've know mine to like the colored or multicolored lights
but seem to not care for the normal white wired yellow light.
and we dont usually have a tree or anything just lights, eggnog, wreaths, cards and eggnog
