Cockatiel breeding problems

Postby Mosabik » Thu Oct 28, 2010 7:34 pm

Hey my cockatiels breed and lay eggs. they lay about 3 - 4 eggs but only 2 of them hatch and only one of the baby comes out fine but one of them always ends up dying because its way too small compared to the other one. i give them stone and crushed eggs for calcium and carrots with mixed bird seeds that include sun flower seeds, corn , papaya and peanut

what could be a solution for this problem ?
Please help !!!!

The parents might be ill. Polyoma is a disease that can hide in healthy looking adults but can affect young birds who dont have any resistance to it.

I would sends some stool and bloodsamples to an avian vet to make sure the parents are 100% healthy.

Hey, Kim offers good advice, check to see that there's no health issues, we don't have a lot of info after reading your post, however it sounds as if your birds might be young or inexpierneced, ie; only feeding oldest / most demanding baby, and having several infertile eggs. One thing i would change is their diet, they need to be on a good pelletized food, maybe a cockatiel breeder formula. When your chicks hatch maybe add a dish with handfeeding formula (dry) and plenty of water in addition to the regular pellets, There are many factors involved here and more info would help us to give you better advice, PS you can always pull the chicks and feed them your self

I vote somehow the three threads get consolidated into one... and aside from where the OP is located, I'd like to know what the goal of breeding is, and why there are 3 species, none of which are successfully reproducing. At first I thought he/she was a troll.

Did I miss something here? I'm sorry I have been a bit off lately. I just noticed this topic and thought I could help. I'll go and see what the other topics were about.

Capt. is giving some good pointers as well. By the way Mosabic stated his question I was under the impression that these were an older breeding couple.

Mosabic started 3 threads simultaneously which all had a subject of <bird species> breeding problems and had somewhat similar concerns with variations and similar information. They could have been put under one topic, and it just made me wonder what was going on.
