Chipped Beak

Postby KiwiBird » Sun Nov 14, 2010 7:53 pm

Hi! I just joined today. I have a 6 month old Sun Conure named Kiwi. We were hanging out watching TV and he was grinding his beak a lot more than normal so I took a look and his bottom beak is chipped. It's just a small chip and he is eating, playing, and nibbling me normally. I haven't the slightest idea how this could have happened. His wings are clipped so he can't fly. When he is out of his cage he is on me or right next to me so I don't think he nibbled anything that could have chipped it.

Should I take him to the vet? We don't have an "avian vet" in my town. Over the summer, my 17 year old cockatiel, Voo Doo, was very ill and I couldn't find an avian vet. There was one vet who was "willing to take a look" but by the time the office opened, Voo Doo had sadly passed away. Long story short, there isn't anyone qualified to see him around here. I got Kiwi from PetSmart but they basically said when they sold him they were done and they offer no services (beaks, nails, etc.)

Since he is acting normally, should I be worried?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Do you have a picture? It's normal for the outer layer of beak to peel or chip away somewhat, so if this is what is going on, it's probably not a big deal. If there is a real dent in the structure of the beak, that I don't know about.

You may want to find out just how far away the nearest vet who is competent with birds is. You can check the AAAV website for a pretty good list. Or ask around at any good bird stores in your area. That's how I found our vet.

I don't think I can get a picture of it. It's really that small of a chip. It isn't just flaking; it's an actual chip. I will check out that website. I drove 3 states away to get chemo therapy for my cat so a few hours for Kiwi won't be so bad!

Thanks so much for your help!

look around in your area for a bird groomer, usually parrot specialty stores will employ one. I am one, if you got a picture i could easily tell you if it needed work. an AVIAN vet would be able to do this as well, i would NOT recommend going to a general vet who says,"sure i'll try". the only difference between a vet and a groomer is price in all honesty.
