Flying With Parrots

Postby Dodger » Thu Nov 25, 2010 12:53 am

Wasnt sure where this would go. So sorry if it's in the wrong section :S

I am wanting to travel from Alaska to Michigan with my birds via airplane.
I have a Green Wing Macaw and an Orange Winged Amazon.

I have flown with dogs, cats and reptiles before. So just wondering if it's the same concept for birds?

Has anyone recently flown with their birds? And how would I go about doing this?

Thanks in advance!

No i haven't flown with my pets, I've asked in the past and told no because of the bird flu thing, lately people have told me that you can now carry parrots in a crate small enough to fit under the seat but i don't know this to be a fact. Please let us know what you find out, Richard

My understanding is that the typical deal is the same as with cats and dogs. But that might make it really hard to get two on the same flight... it is probably worth calling the airline early and finding out what the rules are. It may vary from airline to airline.

What I was able to find out today, was that my Amazon would be able to fly with me in the cabin since he is small enough to fit in a soft carrier or one that would fit under the seat. My Green Wing however, will not be able to fly due to him being large. His tail isnt allowed to touch the bottom of the crate and has to be perched. So he will have to have an extra large kennel that can go underneath the plane. And due to drafts down there as-well as too much noise and stress, they wont allow him to fly underneath the plane due to the risk of death. So I am not sure what my other options are.

My Amazon was with the rest of the cargo when he flew to me. This was in September and I'm not sure how they regulate temperatures in that area of the plane, but he was in great shape when we picked him up!

Same here regarding my Cape Parrot in June. I think there is a section of baggage area that is pressurized/temperature controlled, that's where the animals go. Don't know about the rest. But people do fly with cats/dogs in the cargo all the time. The low pressure makes the animals a bit hypoxic and they just sleep through it all. The darkness also encourages sleep. I really don't think it turns out to be that stressful to them. Here are two articles I wrote about getting my Cape Parrot delivered by airline cargo:
