*why does my green cheek conure puff up??*

Postby smoura123 » Sun Dec 12, 2010 5:54 pm

hey
my 10 wk old green cheek conure isalot better with me and other people handling him now and he steps onto my finger when i put my hand in the cage, and when i pat him he puffs up and closes his eyes..
ive read online that birds puffing up can mean that he is stressed, feels threatened or is happy and comfortable. im hoping that he feels happy with me touching him rather than stressed!! how can you tell? i have realised tht when i pat him and he puffs up, he closes his eyes and opens his beak and closes it a few times..what does that mean?
thanks!

Ditto here to all, Jimmy puffs his head and cape up so much he looks like a panda bear!

I agree, sounds like a contented birdie. Bobbin looks like a big fluff ball when she is real happy and content. When she is angry, her feathers puff up but more like spikes than fluffy and she fans her tail feathers. The only time we see this behavior is right when I come back into the room after being out of her sight for a while. It is her way of letting me know that she didn't like me leaving her.

There is happy fluffing and angry warning fluffing. You can tell one from the other because of the general demeanor of your bird. Sounds like your bird is happy and contented.
