*conure behaviour*

Postby smoura123 » Tue Dec 14, 2010 4:03 am

hi
ive had milo (my green cheek conure) for about a week now and he has been getting tamer and more settled, but every now and again when we go to take him out of his cage he sinks his beak into our fingers/hand and then starts making a weird squawking noise with his beak wide open and tongue flying around everywhere!! what does this mean? and how can we stop it?

Am running late, so this will be quick. I think GCCs are rather quicker than some birds to use their beaks to express themselves, but this is not a problem... the problem is figuring out what he's trying to express. Could be "don't want to", could be "this is mine!". Rewarding him for coming out, respecting his ability to choose, in the right combination may help. That's if it's true biting. If it is less aggressive than that, could be misplaced preening or exploring. Or just plain the normal using the beak to check out the stability of a new perch. You SHOULD let your bird "test" your finger with his beak before he steps up, this is normal, and if you tend to pull it away, you can wind up with a sort of panicky bird trying to get that test in before the perch goes away...
