Question about my Parrots Feathers

Postby razor244 » Sat Jan 15, 2011 1:44 pm

my African grey slurpie :gray: sure loves to play. she enjoys climbing the sides of her cage and hanging bye one foot. she likes to shake and bite her toys or even her foot for fun. in the process of all this horseplay she shoves tail feathers flight feathers and even just rubs parts of her wings agains the side of her cage. he feathers become tattered and look ratty sometimes. i was wondering if any of you have experienced this too. i am considering purchasing a larger cage once i move into another apartment but i still have a feeling she will do the same thing. when i adopted her she was in a huge cage and her feather were even worse then they are now. perhaps you have some hints tips or remedies to help out. i notice that the more frequently she gets her showers the better she looks and always grooms after she dries so ive been doing that more often.

Hey, i think you said that Slurpie was a younger bird and they tend to be more active and wear out their feathers , i Keep my immature Amazons in a large flight cage , all together, and they tear up their feathers also even though that cage is a lot bigger than what most people would keep birds that size in , If Slurpie is a younger .active bird i wouldn't stress over a few ruffled feathers. My older less crazy amazons all have almost perfect feathers, it's just playful teenage thing.

hey thanks for the reply , yes shes young (3yrs). She is defiantly very active and has some very energetic play sessions. It never crossed my mind that since she was young she may be more active and play more then an older bird that has settled down. the insight is appreciated.
