Is this true?

Postby Chris&Akilah » Fri Jan 21, 2011 11:02 am

I was at the pet store this morning, just browsing. They have a sun conure there that is always out with one of the staff. Some customers were asking about it today, and I heard the clerk tell them that parrots won't poop on people they respect. If they poop on you it's because they don't regard you as "the boss". This sounded like typical pet-store staff BS to me. Is there any truth to it?
The little beauty also sounded-off...my god  I don't know how people can tolerate that!! Wow good thing they're so pretty :sun:

It's the other way around. Parrots poop most on the people they love because it's who they spend the most time on. That being said, you can time your parrot's poops or potty train it to reduce this practically to nill. However, this has nothing to do with respect. Clearly those employees know nothing about parrots.

Not true. Pele absolutely adores me and she'll poop anywhere and everywhere, including on me. But if I'm sitting beside my husband (whom she hates) she'll hop over onto his leg and then poop. So if she has the choice, she does prefer to poop on my husband. No wonder he doesn't like my birds...

Parrots don't have "leaders". They're flock animals, they don't relate with one another like pack animals do.

I did hear that parrots generally don't like to poop on their favourite human perches.. and that's coming from multiple sources online.

Not true. Some birds won't poop on their humans and some will. Some won't poop in their cages and some will. Nothing to do with respect.

I don't think it has anything to do with respect. I do know that Scooter very quickly came to realize that when he poops on me, I put him down or away to go clean up, and since he'd rather I not do that, he seems to avoid pooping on me when he can. If there is any truth to the assertion, I'd think that is what lies behind it.

I guess i must be lucky...i've never actually "toilet trained" Missy, but she has only ever pooped on me once, and that was in the first week after I brought her home. If she needs to poop she hops off me, poops, and then comes back :)
Snowy and Charlie are a whole different story though  Snowy will fly to me and land on my head, poop, and then fly off again!
