Boarding soon...

Postby Chris&Akilah » Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:21 am

Next month I'm going to Florida for a week, entirely to see wildlife. Most birding and herping (reptiles ;)) and of course photography. Great fun for me, not so for Akilah I'm afraid. She is going to be boarded at the store where I got her from. I trust she will be taken care of, unfortunately I can't bring her own cage as it is too big. I can bring toys and perches though. Since I bought her there, the first week is free which is  .

I have one month to get her used to a carrier. I'm afraid she will forget me, and there will be other birds in the room, which she hasn't experienced since leaving the place. Basically I'm worried. Anything I should do to prepare her for it? I'm also gonna get 'her' sexed finally, it'll be nice to know for sure.

Crocodylia are one of my favorite animals. Evolutionary wonders. In Mexico, I had the chance to see a 'pregnant' crocodile. She was so majestic. :)

Anyways, I was really worried too when I left. I'm not sure if boarding her would be the best thing. She is going to be pretty upset when you leave. And imagine that stress, plus the stress of being in a new cage and in a new place.

Either way though, she is still young, and typically, younger birds will adjust better to change than older birds.

Every bird deals with being boarded/moving to a different location temporarily differently.

I was lucky with Merlin (our grey), in the fact that I worked for 5 years at a large pet store, hence once he was a year old, I brought him to work with me, so moving/car rides/carriers were no problem and he has no problem with the change, or weekends away at the in-laws.

Rosco & Stryder, our other two are not quite as well-travelled, but as long as I have some treats (veggies/fruit - something with natural water in it) to munch on in their carriers, they're not too bad. I usually hear them talking from their carriers :).

I think as you purchased Akilah from a store, she'll probably remember the experience and hopefully the sounds of other birds will be welcoming for her. And no worries - she'll remember you! They always do :).

Ours eat and play less when they "know" we're away, but still keep up their chatter.

Oh, and I don't know why or where I got this from, but it works - I always back them into their carriers. For example, I put Merlin into his carrier tail first, and put my hand right above his head so he doesn't pop it up. It works with Rosco (Caique) & Stryder (white-faced Cockatiel) too :)

Have a fun and exciting trip, and know that Akilah won't be all alone while you're away. I'm sure you'll be excited to pick her up as soon as you're home!

When you return, I do recommend short car rides once in a while, to let Akilah know that going in the carrier & the car isn't always a bad thing (aka you leaving her or going to the vet), but can be fun. And it gives you an excuse for some really bad car singing to make her feel comfortable :D.

Boarding soon...update

Postby Chris&Akilah » Mon Mar 21, 2011 11:19 pm

Here's an update on this, Akilah came home yesterday after ten days of boarding and seems very happy to be home! It's great to have him back. Yeah, him...I had them do a DNA test while he was there, and she's a boy, lol. My best guesses are always wrong, it's fine by me though! Does that mean I should change his name to Akilo? ;)

They said he was good and had no problems. He had a lot of company, that's for sure, since it was march break the room was full of all sorts of other parrots, his neighbours were a blue/gold macaw and an amazon. Now I feel kinda bad that he's back to being alone when I'm not there...

I went to Florida, and saw feral quaker's and black-capped (jenday) conures (in different locations). That was pretty cool. The Quakers had a nest on a hydro pole. Both species are well established there.

Were you down in the glades? Never saw a crocodile outside of a zoo, but plenty of gators and snakes. No parrots, though! I grew up in FL.
