Let's talk noise!

I thought I'd write two, since I have birds at two different houses.


1. What kind of parrots do you own?
Male Princess Parrot, Male Red Wing Parrot, Male Cockatiel, Female Cockatiel

2. How would you describe their average daily noise making schedule.
Princess Parrot can be very loud, has many different calls and whistles and often ends up whistling the same note over and over and over and over...
Red Wing is very quiet unless he's pissed off or the King Parrots come to visit, then he'll be loud-ish but not too loud
Male Cockatiel is very loud with lots of calls and whistles, but not as annoying as the Princess
Female Cockatiel is fairly quiet, she only calls out when someone comes down the driveway or if she is left by herself
3. Do you have moments in which you say to yourself "oh my god, I can't live like this”?
Not often, I'm good at blocking out noises, mum doesn't always cope with it too well
4. How do you, or did you, handle your parrots when they are loud.
The Princess can be 'broken' out of a yelling cycle by being disrupted, he'll then either be quiet, or start chattering to himself
5. Any other notes or tips on the subject will be most welcomed.

2. How would you describe their average daily noise making schedule.
They have their chattering noises, but can also be very very loud. Especially when imitating the neighbours Galah
3. Do you have moments in which you say to yourself "oh my god, I can't live like this”?
Not often, they quieten fairly well when asked, I've also grown up with birds so loudest is just normal to me
4. How do you, or did you, handle your parrots when they are loud.
They are often just asked to be quiet which usually stops the yelling, if we are watching a movie and they're getting excited by it, they are given some food and moved to another room.
5. Any other notes or tips on the subject will be most welcomed.

Alexander's Parakeet (i.e. Jeff) .

2. How would you describe their average daily noise making schedule.

Ahh well Jeff screams usually when he sees me. He's about two months old and i bought him when he was about two weeks. I hand fed him.

3. Do you have moments in which you say to yourself "oh my god, I can't live like this”?

Yup its almost through out the day "lol". I love him though, i mean he does stuff that i wasn't expecting from a parrot you know. However As soon as he hears my whistle, or hears me come upstairs near his room, he just starts off with the yelling noise.

4. How do you, or did you, handle your parrots when they are loud.

well i still don't know what to do and iam looking for all suggestions to help me out of this situation. Jeff is a great Parrot and is very disciplined when it comes to biting or being stubborn. But this "eeeee, eeeee, eeeee, eeee" sound of his makes me shoot my self .

Ahh well for you my friend, i think an African grey would be a wonderful parrot (Talking about my choice in your hands mostly ). He's very talkative (you can have him sing you a song), he's quite, He learns well, Makes almost all sense to what he's talking about if taught well, is a true companion and is very very cute.

1 Harlequin Macaw, 1 Catalina Macaw, 1 Jardines Parrot and 2 Hahns Macaws

2. How would you describe their average daily noise making schedule. ..
They are very quiet when its dark/dusk and when they are eating. I get up at 6am in the morning and Pickle, one of the Hahns, will whisper his good mornings to me (his cage is next to the bathroom door). Sebastian, my Harlequin, will put in a hello or two, but if I forget and turn on a light, he will start screaming and its horribly loud. He does this if he doesn't have eye contact with me (yeah, he's that bonded) and I can hear him screaming half way down the driveway after I leave for work. They also all scream when we leave the house or return to the house, but once they know someone is there, they settle down.

3. Do you have moments in which you say to yourself "oh my god, I can't live like this”?
Definitey, especially with the large macaws. Sometimes I think they try to outscream each other and its a very ear-piercing scream.

4. How do you, or did you, handle your parrots when they are loud.
We usually ignore them, and it works most of the time. One thing we've done with Sebastian since he is so insistent with his screaming (and I don't recommend this since its considered bad parenting, LOL) is that if he doesn't stop after a certain period of time, we squirt him with water and he shuts up immediately. We've done it so often that all we have to do now is show him the water bottle and he stops, so it actually helps.

5. Any other notes or tips on the subject will be most welcomed.
Know and learn your birds cries. Find out why they are screaming and try to prevent or change it. Covers, dark rooms, more toys... there are ways to work with it. Even with squirt guns where necessary.

2.)he chatters and talks throughout the day, he screeches for a few minutes when i leave or come home sometimes and mostly when the dogs barl

2 Mornings Rambo grumbles and Myrtle sings "La La La"
Afternoons they are together in the sun room and try to out talk each other
When the dogs run through barking, they bark and scream

3 Trying to do my Aunt Betty's taxes yesterday (she always waits to the last day) the dogs were barking - the parrots were screaming and even the 6 cockatiels were in on it

4 Lock the dogs outside and seperate the parrots - I can deal with little cockatiels
