i clipped my boy

Postby rones » Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:11 pm

i clipped ilias today....he can still fly(straight) to his favourite spots(which are high) but he gets tired more easily...he is isn't chirping but he makes a noise like a squeeky hick-ups...is that ok?
i clipped him twice because was very anxious about the result...but now i think it's ok...his wings are even and NOT too short...that was my first time... :)

I FORGOT TO WRITE THE WORD IN BOLD....I HAVE EDITED IT...

As long as you cut only his primaries, and he can still fly, then I think you've done a good job.

i have cut 5 of the primaries and left 25% of their length...i left untouched the 2 last feathers which make the "X" over the tale when the parrot is not flying...but i am afraid they might break...

i m sorry if my english is not that well...
you know what they say...if you don't use it you 'll lose it...

If he can fly straight, that's good, but is that what you want? If you're doing this for safety, can he still fly out of the window etc? Many owners clip so their birds can only glide downwards.

my windows are all shut...(i ve learned my lesson by losing my first budgie that way... and now i m extra cautious)

Hey Rones, i usually start clipping from the outter most primaries just short of the upper coverlets with some smaller birds you may need to cut 7 or more, it just depends on how much lift you want him to have.Cut less feathers than you think and then you can always clip more later.

i might clip him a bit more in a couple of days...
i left the 2 outer feathers because i wanted him to look natural...should i clip them too???

I cut them, guess i figure they'll break-em anyway ,and i'd rather have a clean cut than have them damage a feather up near the quick. Those and feathers cut too short don't always grow back right , but that's just me. .
