This hasn't gone so well :(. Micky escaped Friday morning while I was trying to put a millet spray in the cage, boy was it NOT fun chasing her around the house. She got downstairs and did land on Akilah's cage at one point, Akilah just seemed surprised to see another bird all of a sudden and didn't do anything. I finally cornered Micky at the patio doors and got bitten on the cuticle while picking her up, staining her beautiful breast feathers with my blood :(. Shoulda used a towel but I was freaked about her getting near Akilah, because I was trying to quarantine. She even dropped a poop into Akilah's cage. I cleaned it thoroughly. Micky is fine apart from looking like she got shot in the chest but now I'm very worried that she was exposed to Akilah already :(. I knew it was possible that Micky might get out, but I never thought she would fly DOWN the staircase!! Not a great start! I'm going to get her into the vets for a checkup next week.

Sorry to hear that.

Accidents do happen though, so don't beat yourself up too much.

I think maybe you should keep the budgie in an enclosed room, like your bedroom or an office. You won't have to risk her getting out and flying all around the house. Plus, it might be easier to train her for now at least).

Micky will go in the big upstairs bathroom for now, it's got a window and is really the only suitable enclosed room left. It was "air freshened" though so I'm letting it air out right now. For a practically-wild pet store budgie, this guy isn't shy about making a dive for the cage door even if my arm is through it. S/he did a good job of cleaning up, only a tiny bit of blood left.

Budgies and cockatiels get along great most of the time. I think it's probably because they co-exist in nature, but that is just a theory.

zaza your probably right and they both seem like pretty easy going types of birds so that could be another reason :D so maybe they could try a cockatiel with the budgie?"

Senegals seem to have a reputation for being aggressive with other birds, so I would take care when it is time for a proper introduction! I'm sorry Mickey got away a broke your quarantine, but c'est la guerre.... you do your best and that's all you can do. It will probably be fine. Sounds like you have a bold little birdie there!

Not anymore, he's gone, to a better place! It's not what you think don't worry ;). Here's the story. My brother and his family came for a visit yeterday, including extended family; his mother-in-law Aida. She lives with them, a lovely Italian woman who barely speaks English. She REALLY took to Micky, and vice verca. She spent most of the time sitting next to Micky's cage, which I brought out into the front room while people were over for some social time, chatting with him and he started to chatter back and puff up a bit. My neice and nephew took to Micky too. Long story short, it was decided the family would get their own bird...but I just asked them if they wanted to take Micky home. It just felt right and it really made their day which was nice because I don't get to see them a lot. Aida's aunt, who lives next door, has a white-capped pionus and has had other birds in the past so they will have help, I printed off some good care sheets, and articles from this site too. I think Micky will have a good life with them. There are always lots of people in that house he'll get tons of attention. They just went off with Micky in his cage and he rode home on my neices lap, chirping the whole way. I barely got to know him but at least I'll still be able to see him! That was rather uncharacteristic of me actually...I do feel a bit like...why'd I do that?? :(

Aww that was really sweet of you and maybe you can get a bigger bird now that will get along better with your senegal?
