Liz I may not post much but I read and your stories as you say are also learning tools.
By reading what goes on with your flock, lets someone know whats going on with other flocks and helps them to understand flock enteractiions. And just might help them out.
So please keep posting about your flock, its nice to know that I am not the only one thats crazy about there flock. LOL.
It takes a great man to give advice tactfully
But a greater to accept it graciously

There are so many times that the right technical information does not do as well at explaining things to some of us as it should and at these times a good story about how our birds are acting does so much better. Stories are a very important way for us to learn and remember information, I just love them.

Last night Rambo did not want to go to his sleeping cage. He kept coming out to be with me and the other critters. This morning I woke up with 3 dogs, 3 cats and Rambo in my bed.

Disclaimer: my critters are not normal in any way. They all know that each one is part of my family. The new kitten is starting to become part of the family thanks to the dogs for teaching him the rules. If the kitten is eyeing the birds one of the dogs will jump in and remind him of the rules.

I really wish that Patch, the kitten that my large doges nearly killed and I saved, would develop some bird sense at least. He was so tiny when he fell in the dog pen, probably while trying to get a bird, he was not much longer than a bic lighter and probably had just opened its eyes and was out on its first hunting trip with his mom. Then after I got him relatively healthy, I got Pepper my boxer who was also too young to be away from her mom. Patch used to throw Pepper all over the living room like she was a rag doll and now pepper returns that favor and tosses patch all over the place in spite of my trying to get her past it. Pepper is fascinated by the birds and mostly that they throw out things that she can eat. Patch likes the larger birds for much the same reason except he views whatever they throw out as a toy to bat around. But he is much too interested in the little ones and right now I can't let the little ones out to fly about because the cat pen is undergoing repairs. Lots of fun these days.

There are unusual things going on in my back yard. The boxer, Jake, has been doing well with the horses so I let him run while I feed the and shovel sh.t. I feed them all at the same time. Jake has started carrying his food bowl over to where the horses are eating to have breakfast together. I know it is not healthy, but the horses will eat any dry food he leaves in his bowl. Jake being a different species will then pee on a mound of hay. Any time more than one species is together you have to do more thinking and planning.

I have started giving Jake two bowls of food. The first is a hot dog and piece of cheese that I used to put on his dry dog food. Then give him his dry when I put him back in the kennel so the horses won't get it.

I am working on a design for hay mangers that will keep the hay far enough off the ground that Jake cannot pee on it but that the miniature horse can still reach it.

Check at you feed store for something like these https://www.southernstates.com/catalog/ ... racks.aspx
Or ask them about Hay bags and ask them to show you how to use them so the horse doesn't get tangled in it.

Liz, hotdogs are real bad for dogs given on a regular basis (even the all beef ones). They are full of nitrates and salt (both things mess up their kidneys).

Thank you. I was retired from Southern States but did not even think of looking there. They do not lack for space (my daughter always wants the best. The smaller stall is larger than my bedroom.) but the corner rack would be great.
