Are Parakeets and Parrolets compatible?

Postby Ilovebirds » Fri Apr 22, 2011 10:55 am

My friend recently had his Parakeets mate and they laid eggs, they hatched about a month ago and are the same age as my Parrolet. Is it possible to keep them both together?

I highly doubt it. Budgies are feisty, but generally not outright vicious. Parrotlets can be outright vicious to other birds. When I even introduce males and females for breeding I have to be very, very careful if they are not very young birds. Not uncommon for one to outright kill the other if not introduced slowly and properly.

You can still have a budgie. Just don't house them together and don't count on them getting along. Have a plan in place on how you're going to manage them if they can't be out at the same time, etc. Sometimes you just have to play musical birds.

You have a 4 week old parrotlet? I thought your parrotlet was older?

I think he was meaning the adult budgies.

I was going to get a parrotlet before I decided on adopting my GCC. I also have two budgies who I wanted to be able to interact with the parrotlet. After doing some research, I decided that was a huge no-no.

As patdbunny said, they have a reputation for being bullies and thinking they're bigger than they actually are. They'll even attack a much larger bird. I personally wouldn't risk it.

That said, you don't have to house them together and they don't have to interact. There are ways to keep birds in the same home even though those birds may not get along.

:? Oh! Cut me some slack. I'm a bit sleep deprived from the little bourke. I lose about 20-50 IQ points when I have the really young ones.

No, the Parrotlet and the baby Parakeet are the same age.

Thanks for the answers guys. Gonna spend my allowance on an extra cage.
