Meeting a new bird

Postby BudgieSansWings » Thu May 12, 2011 2:48 pm

While I have met plenty of birds and had no problems with it... I'm a little bit nervous about my upcoming meeting with a possible birdie for me(if things go well, it will mean a lifetime companion, after all). Does anyone have any suggestions about ways to make a good first impression with an adult grey? What questions should I make sure to ask the shop?

No sudden movements, and don't force yourself on the bird.

Also; you want to know its medical history, how old it is, if its been sexed, what they're feeding it, and where it came from.
Wild animals are called 'wild' for a reason. Keep them that way. Adopt your pets, or buy them from a certified breeder.

Yeah those kind of questions are ok. But really , how do you and the bird fell about each other? All the rest is really not that important ,what matters is , what's your gut feeling? There will be plenty of other birds to meet and is this the one? Can i bond with this bird and make it trust me, all the rest ,diet ,habits, etc. can be worked out if you can make that conection with the bird, and how about a trial period, maybe 30 days to see how you feel about each other.Adult greys are kind of set in their ways , as are you. A baby is one thing but an adult bird i would ask for a trial period.

I already know that she is unsexed, 6-7 years old and the casualty of a divorce. How you could give up your birds over a human relationship ending, I don't understand...

I hadn't thought about asking for a trial period. I'll have to ask about that. I was definately planning on good health confirmed by a vet visit after I take her home as a requisite.

I always say that my birds are more important to me than my boyfriend. I'm only joking about it some of the time...
I would only give up my birds if I absolutely had to. Like if I were dead or hospitalized for a long amount of time. Other than that, we're a package deal.

That said, just take your time and feel things out with the bird. When I adopted Cheney Bird, he and I just clicked. He took to me and my apartment incredibly quickly. It just felt right, if that makes sense.

I am a big fan of letting the bird pick me.

As for leaving the bird/rehoming. Breaking up/divorcing is SUPER hard. You may not be emotionally/financially capable of caring properly for your birds. I had to give up some pets after I broke things off with my fiance while pregnant with my first and had to move back in with my mom. I honestly had nowhere to go and nothing to go with- and was pregnant. It was heartbreaking but had to be done. Try not to judge people if you have never been in their shoes. It is easy to say what you would or wouldn't allow.
