Does your parrot "talk" in its sleep?

Postby entrancedbymyGCC » Sun May 15, 2011 1:46 pm

I woke up for a bit in the wee hours this morning, and while I was trying to get back to sleep, I heard noises from the office (where the birds cages are) that sounded like a very faint version of Scooter's alarm call. When I went to check it out, both birds were apparently asleep -- Scooter on his back in his hut and evidently SOUND asleep, it took him a little bit to stir and turn himself over and around to check out what was going on. Everybody was totally fine. I can only assume he was dreaming and vocalizing in the dream.

I know some of you sleep in the same room as your birds -- do they ever vocalize when asleep?

Yeah, I think they dream. I've never heard anything loud or alarm callish. I've heard mild grumbling and little chirpy sounds and of course beak grinding.

No Name chirps in his sleep all the time. He's doing it right now, actually. Pigpen never does. Cheney Bird does his contact call for me pretty often which is really confusing when I'm laying in bed or on the computer and when I go to check on him, he's sleeping in his hammock.

Me and my birds are very sound sleepers. Once the lights are out, my room is completely silent.

On a side note, I do believe parrots dream.

I believe that my cockatiel Cheerio had nightmares. He would wake up in the middle of the night freaking out and flapping even though the rest of the house was still and quiet. It always took me a good 20 minutes to calm him down, even though the other birds chilled out the moment the lights went on.

Cockatiels are actually well known for having night frights. It's one of the things that make me nervous about owning once since I have fire trucks and ambulances going by my apartment pretty frequently.

Rupert talks in his sleep almost every time he has a nap. It's very cute. Pippin does it from time to time too.

Never experienced that. How are you sure that the birds aren't awake or waking up while doing this?

I've actually been holding Cheney Bird while he's sleeping and doing my contact call. I can tell he's asleep because it's the only time his eyes are closed and he's laying still for that long. Same with No Name. He has a sleep swing that he'll only go to for nap or bed time. If he's sitting on it, his head is turned around and his beak is buried in his feathers. But he's also making "cheep cheep cheep" sounds.
