What is this noise?

Postby Ticoisagoodbird » Thu May 26, 2011 12:02 pm

Hi folks,

I am new to this forum, I have a question that Google (that let me know the beak-grinding thing is a sign of content) couldn't answer so I found this!

I have a Blue Front female that I hand raised, she is about 5 now.

Occasionally she makes this "popping" sound that sounds like a bottle being uncorked. When I make the sound back at her, she gets furious! She will scramble over to me as fast as she can to try to give me a bite unless I stop. She actually will never fully bite me, but I can tell she is serious about hating that sound when I make it...so I don't.

However, what DOES that sound mean? Am I saying something rude in parrot-speak? If so, how come SHE can make it and I can't?

I'm not sure if that sound has a specific meaning for Amazon parrots but otherwise it seems to be a learned sound. It is possible that it's a sound the parrot feels threatened by and although it imitates it, doesn't want to hear it. Ever popped a wine cork around the bird? Might have scared it but it learned the sound. It doesn't scare the bird when it makes it but when you do it feels threatened. Think about any other places it could have heard that sound from? Are you the bird's first and only owner or has it been in another home before? That can also lead to unexplainable behaviors.

No cork popping here, and I raised her so I guess there is no real answer. I'll file it away under "who knows?" Thanks for the opinion anyway!
