Boy or Girl?

Postby Fallen_Parakeet » Sun Jun 05, 2011 2:41 pm

Is my Parakeet a boy or a girl? s/he is still young so it's kindof hard to tell.

Definitely looks like a girl, if the part above the beak (nostril area) is pink/brown its a girl. If its purple-blueish its a boy. Out of my 4 parakeets 3 are girls and only one has a pink nostril area. It looks really beautiful compared to the brown.

It may change color after a while depends how old it is. If its been 5-12 months then usually it will stay that color maybe darken a bit.

Sometimes girl's beaks are even white or tan.

Congrats on the girl :D

No problem! And your budgie looks exactly like mine :) if yours is still young the head of it may turn more yellow, that's what happened to mine after a year.

its very hard to tell when they are so young especially if your budgie is a spangle/albino/lutino a good rule of thumb it to wait until after there first moult (the bars on there head go away) and judging by the cere then. another way is not completely fool prof but generally is the nostril has white or a lighter colour around it (look really close) its a female. but this generally changed if your bird is a spangle/albino/lutio.

If it's COMPLETELY pink, chances are it's a boy. If you see light colored 'rings' around the nostrils, it's almost always a girl. As NJJessie said, it's very hard to tell when they are babies.
