I need major help with my young gcc.

Postby WolffyAndBobby » Thu Jul 28, 2011 2:03 pm

Hey my name's Wolffy and i'm eleven. I got Bobby, my gcc for my birthday and I love the little guy to death.
But he has biting problems. he bites when we try to get him to step up, and he just does it out of the blue. He was sitting on my shoulder one night, we'd been away and I wanted to interact with him, he was watching me wash dishes and walk around, and I walked into the bathroom to look in the mirror, with Bobby really likes and he just randomly bit my neck! He is my very first bird, and I think he wasn't handled very well in his hatching home. he's also bit me and drawn blood various times. He has toys galore and a big cage, but I don't feel comfortable having him out, or holding him anymore.
I need all the help I can get.

You should try to tame and train Bobby. There are many places where you can learn how. In fact, scroll up and click on the cartoon that says trained parrot blog. You shouldn't of gotten him for your birthday though, before you own a bird you must do months of research.

P.S. I'm twelve and I have a cinnamon green cheek conure.

Did you tell him no and tap his beak. They learn the word no just like any furry animal.

@Papaya- I did do much research before I got him.

What does the clicker training do?

it's the first step into training your parrot not to bit and/or step up. What it does is that when your parrot hears the *click* it will soon realize it's going to get a treat soon after or it did something right and it's going to get a treat for doing the right thing. Here's and example: Say you tell your parrot to turn around on the perch. He does it right *click* now give him a treat. You can practice this while he is in the cage incase you have a parrot that is bitetastic. Then eventually get a target (you can use chop sticks) and get the bird to eaither touchs the end of the 'chop stick'. example: Point the 'chop stick' at the bird (not in the face, what if I poked a pencil in your face; but anyways.) if he touches the end of the 'chop stick' then *click* and reward s/he's favorite treat. Byd oing this for I would say a week s/he wil learn that if he touches the end of the 'chop stick' s/he will get a treat. You can drag the 'chop stick' around the cage in order for it to get that point as well. Then once s/he's goten the hang of that you can point s/he onto a branch and/or perch. After awile get the s/he to get closer to you on the perch. Eventually get s/he to be pointed to your hand and/or finger. He will be so emersed into wanting to get the treat that s/he will probably not realize s/he's on your hand and/or finger. Hope this helps! There is actually videos for this by KilliParrot's Channel.

You could also use skewers for a stick. My cinnamon green cheek conure learned and perfected target training in less than 1 hour. It should be pretty easy with your GCC.

It's pretty easy to do with any bird I would think.
