Eclectus Is my home environment right?

Postby jax2154 » Sun Aug 07, 2011 6:29 pm

Hello,
I've done a ton of research as to which bird will fit right with me and the Eclectus is perfect. I have adequate space, time and money to take care of him. I've been reading everything and talking to the family owned bird store and I've had some conflicting answers. I thought it best to ask people who actually own this bird.
I've heard that they don't like loud house holds and they could start plucking them selves. What does 'loud' consist of? I have a husky that loves to talk to us in the morning and occasionally in the day. She's not a loud barking kind of dog. Also, my boyfriend lives to play shooting video games when he gets home from work. Will the gun noises be bad for him? His cage will be in our room because we rent 2 rooms in the house. There might be noise from the TV until I go to bed (I work a 9/5 m/f). From what I've concluded, if you get them as a baby and get them used to being in different situations then he gets accustomed to it. He will have about 15 hours of quiet time to himself during the night and day while I'm at work. Will he be alright in my house?

Thank you!

First, you have to know that Ekkies are not for appartment dwellers. They do ot usually scream, but when they do, it is ear piercing.

Now, about the loud household... What is meant by quiet household is not so much the noise level as the activity and intensity level of people. In some households, people are naturally loud, kids come and go, doors get slammed, shouting goes on, dogs bark all day, and so forth. You get the idea.

Ekkies thrive in more quiet environments, which doesn't mean there has to be no noise. I listen to loud music from time to time, the tv is on at night, etc and that is not a problem.

The most particular side of the Eclectus is its diet. On that matter, you really have to know what you're doing. Make sure you read a lot, go on Land of Vos and become a member of Laurella Desborough's email chain.

Ask questions here too, and we will try to answer them. There is also an australian forum dedicated to Ekkies, easy to find.
