How to deal with jealousy issues between 2 birds?

Postby KiwiMango » Mon Aug 29, 2011 8:48 am

I brought home a sun conure and a quaker parrot 2 days ago. I picked them out when they were very young and they've been raised together and are handfed. I have been spending equal amount of time with both birds, but the sun conure is a bit skittish (will touch me but won't let me touch him), but the quaker has taken to me pretty quickly. I started working with both of them last night with the target training, mainly to get the sun conure to trust me. Suprisingly, the quaker wasn't so interested in that but the sun conure caught on immediately. Problem is, every time the sun conure gets close to me the quaker rushes right over to bite him and push him away. Even went as far as head-butting him right off the perch. I can't separate them because the sun conure will freak out. How do I handle my quaker's jealousy issues? Should I correct him when he fights with my conure, and how?

:irn: Thanks for reading :sun:

For the birds safety, you will need to separate them. Do you have them both out while training? Maybe only take one out, train for 5-10mins, put back in cage, take the other out, train for same amount of time. Must be very hard to train one bird with the other butting in. Are they house in same cage? You may need to get a 2nd cage and keep them side by side. Let the conure freak out, his safety is paramount if the quaker is attacking him and he needs you to do what you have to do to keep him safe. good luck (PS, so envious, I would love a quaker)

Thankfully, I already got this one figured out. Now when I'm training the quaker stays on my shoulder while I work with the sun conure. That has eliminated the fighting and has made the conure more apt to want to come closer to me and stand on my arm since he sees the quaker doing it (though he still won't let me touch him). The fighting isn't bad and is only when they are both out on top of the cage and I am within reach. Even then it was more chasing away and a little beaking until the conure backed off.

Just be careful with the Quaker figuring out that he can bite you to get your attention from his position on your shoulder.
