Help! My Quaker Parrot Won't Stop Biting!

Postby Messidor08 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 6:02 pm

My Quaker is just over 4 months old and has started biting a lot. He doesn't lunge like he did at first when I got him at 2 months. But now he will willingly come to my and step up whenever I ask him to. But for one, all he seems to want to do is sit on my head. And when I try to remove him from my head or any situation he wants to be in like when he is chewing on things he shouldn't, he will bite my fingers. Which, I can understand. But now, even if i am just holding him he will randomly start biting my fingers. Not in a frightened manner but not in a playful manner either. Every thing I have read says to ignore the biting and just make him step up repeatedly after he bites to show him biting isn't going to get my hand away but that isn't working either. P.S. He has never plucked his feather and he doesn't scream either. He gets several hours of playtime out of the cage and always has food and water and toys. So with no other problem identifying factors I'm at a total loss of what to do.

Have you tried 'the earthquake'? When your quaker is on your hand and bites you, shake your hand a little to create a little earthquake for him. Not enough to fling him off, just enough to make him lose a little balance. He'll let go of the bite and it will distract him. He won't like being unbalanced, so eventually he'll learn cause and effect and he'll stop biting so hard. As for being on top of your head, my quaker does the same thing. His favorite spot is to perch on my glasses while I'm still wearing them  . I think they just like being up as high as they can get.

I advocate this method. Use it as a distraction, but also teach him that whenever he bites, he loses balance. Eventually he will be discouraged from biting. It's important that you don't react in any other way, though. Don't flinch or give way to his bite. Just drop the finger that he is sitting on quickly and pick it back up again.
