What are the basics I need for my Parrot?

Postby Danii » Tue Aug 30, 2011 3:44 am

I will be getting my mums Amazon Parrot, Percy in 2 weeks time.

I don't know much about them although I am researching a lot.

I just wanted some advice on how to let him settle properly and be a good owner.

He is coming with a cage, perch and feeding and water bowls.

Is there anything I should do/can do for him to make it as homely as possible?

Ok, here's some basics/luxuries that you should get.
Basics:

- Cuttlebone (neccesary)
- mineral block (necessary)
- natural wood perches (can be found in most pet shops, good to have, as normal wooden dowel perches are not good for their feet)
- toys (necessary because birds, especially amazons, need a variety of toys to keep them entertained and active)
- food (necessary obviously lol)

Good luck with your amazon!

Ladu covered most things. Is it possible for you to spend time with Percy before you bring him home? Or do you already do that? While at your moms, maybe you could give him his favourite treats so he sees you as the good guy. Sing, talk, play, dance, be silly for him and with him so he knows you voice and smell. The more you can do for him now the easier it will be later. But do expect that he will be out of sorts when he arrives at your place. He is having a major life change and they only way he can express his feelings is by biting, screaming, etc (basically a kiddy tantrum) Just be patient and loving with him, let him set the pace and you both will get there. Good luck, keep us posted
