Usual moulting?

Postby laducockatiel » Thu Sep 01, 2011 12:33 pm

Hi guys,

Yesterday my cockatiel lost one tail feather and today he lost one wing feather and he has lost one or two small feathers in the past two days. Is this unusual for his first molt?

I am going through the same with Rory tiel. He was born end of March. He seems to lose them after he has been jumping around on the couch too excitedly or flying around and landing on play gym or cage top. They must be "loose" cos I wouldnt have thought they would just fall out. He also has lost some after I scritch him, he scratches himself and then a little feather flies off him. He has also lost tail feathers, was clipped when I got him but is fully flighted now, havent noticed lost wing feathers. But he is healthy, happy, eating, playing etc. His moods have not changed in any way. So I thought this was normal till I read your post. Hopefully it is normal. My budgies seem to lose a lot more feathers than Rory tiel. So far, the gcc who is older (7mths approx) hasnt started moulting. Unless the breeder lied to me and Rory is older than 5mths or all birds moult at different times.

I was just searching through the forum for this exact topic! I've had my GCC about a month and a half. The last two days he's lost 4 or 5 small feathers while I was scratching him (but very lightly and he's never lost any before because of that). I was just wondering if this was the beginning of his first molt...

Since it's been a few weeks since you have posted.. what has happened since then? Was is molting? Or something else?

Thanks!

It is most likely a molt. Pay attention when you give them a bath, you might notice tons of pin feathers coming in that are usually noticeable under the outer feathers.
