Going on short vacation? Please advise.

Postby KiwiMango » Wed Sep 07, 2011 11:49 am

It's been nearly 2 weeks since I've brought home my sun conure and quaker. I have established a normal routine for them in which I will give them attention in the morning before I leave for work and when I get home I will let them out of their cage for a few hours until bedtime. During their out of cage time we practice target training and they get love and attention and fresh food (fruits/veggies) and treats. I am planning to go out of town this weekend for my sister's birthday camping trip and will be gone from Friday night until Sunday afternoon/evening. I am worried about how this may affect my birds. I do have a friend coming over once a day to allow them some time out of their cage and to give them fresh food and water. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this weekend easier on my birds?

Thanks Michael. That makes me feel much better about leaving for the weekend.

Make sure your friend is confident with birds and can control your birds (as in being able to play with them and put them in their cage) as if Your friend is not, the birds may get scared or frightened and hurt themselves by panicking. A good way to do this, is to have him/her come over and you go out of the room. She will have to get them out, play with them and put them in and if she can do this then she will hopefully be able to care for your birds while you are gone. Has she ever handled your birds? If not then let her visit frequently a few days before so they can get used to her. Then you can enjoy the camping trip knowing your birds are ok!

Enjoy the camping trip!
