Lotto the yellow head

Postby viki » Sat Sep 10, 2011 4:15 pm

Anyone who knows my story know all the probems i had with birds when i just joined the world of birds.
And now heres another story:
so little birds doing great, only we felt she needed a friends. My boyfriend always wanted n amazon or something that size which will talk alot. We got in touch with a breeder selling Hans McCaws, but wen we met the birds and heard them scream we changed our mind and moved on to make a new search for a friend. We came across a pet shop selling a big range of amazons. Yellow head for €1400, the one with less yellow for €800 and the voilet for €800 and as we didnt have loads of money we chose the one with less yellow. we droped in every weekend to play with the birdie, and today was pick up day. we wer so excited and a little nervous about the big step.
when we arrived at the pet shop our bird was nowhere to be seen, with that the man behind the tills told us his sad story. some kids came in 2 days before hand and opened the cage the 3 birds flew out and out the door also. he managed to get two of the birds back as they landed on a nearby tree, but our baby was no where to b seen. he has advertisments up about the lost bird and said we could wait for the bird if we wished, he also has links with another breeder who has birds ready in 2 months if he doesnt return.
but he made us an offer. he would sell us the yellow head for €950 if we wanted to take one today.
we thought about it. we fellt most likely someone had found the other bird and given him a home. as the area is fully residential. we didnt wnt to think about what else could have happened. (i just hope someone did find him). But such an offer, we felt like we couldnt resist.
we left the shop with a yellow headed amazon, feeling like wed won the lotto.
And thats how she got her name Lotto.
right now shes exploring the bedroom floor and all her toys.

Oh Wow, Little bird has a new "friend", even tho he is probably 10 times as big. I love the way the birds have gotten their names (LB and now Lotto) From memory, werent you thinking of getting LB a tiel as a friend? What changed your mind, just curiosity. I have one tiel, dont think I will get a second, only because I already have one. My Tiel is an amazing little guy, so funny, full of spunk, bossy, etc but I wanted something different, so got a cinn gcc and am not disappointed.

Okay... Um... Amazons kill Cockatiels. In no way in any world, will a Cockatiel and an Amazon be friends. When puberty hits, expect Skittles' aggressive behavior, but far more dangerous.

Also.... You got a Yellow Headed Amazon instead of a Hahn's Macaw because Macaws scream? You need to know that Yellow Heads are EXTREMELY vocal and will scream and make all sorts of sounds if he wishes. I really don't think you'll be able to handle a hot 3 amazon if you couldn't handle a Senegal before.. Do lots of reading and good luck!

I am sure you did all your research BEFORE you decided to take on this bird and are well aware of the dangers to Little Bird and the screaming. I am sure you have learnt a lot since Skittles and gained confidence in bird handling/care by having LB, even if he is a little, and easier, bird.

well we wer originally going to get another teil but wen we went to take him home my bf was in love with the amzons, who looked so clean and good natured, while the baby teils looks grubby and their feathers wer in poor condition and noses wer blocked. I was still willing to nurse him back to health but my bf was pretty egar to get an amazon, and i thought 3 birds was a bit much so soon.

the 2 birds will never b left alone together, never ever, but another customer was telling us about how he has 4 teils and 3 amazons and they all play as if theirs no size difference.
te mccaws has a piercing scream even out doors which drilled tru my head, but the amzons seems less piercing. even the adults in the shop.
wev already experienced her bite, which was just a testing bite so we r seeing how strong she can be.
Wev read alot but i think u can never read enough.
i never thought she mite kill little bird, but im glad i know now, i planned to keep them separate always anyway to prevent any injuries, but now ill b extra careful, thanks.

Viki, the reason we joined the forum was to "learn and share" our adventure with our feathered friends. We learn all the time about them and about ourselves. Nobody is perfect, nobody knows everything, so we are all on a learning curve. Common sense would tell you not to put your 2 birds together. You never put 2 birds together, you need to quarantine, introduce slowly, etc. I dont have tiel and gcc together, even tho they are of similar size, they have their own cages, and altho out of cage at same time, they are doing their own thing, so very rarely come close to each other. They are also always supervised - just in case they do get too close. We are here to support and advise, laugh and cry, and just have fun and swap stories. Although if there was something really wrong, we should be told, and we need to be mature about it and take the advice on. I dont think you have done anything wrong getting Lotto as long as you and BF are aware of what is entailed in having this bird and your responsibility to Little Bird.

Good for you. I dont know anything about the species, but I have heard that some just-weaned birds (of many species) will revert back to formula when there are major changes occur in their life. You did the right thing, I think anyways.

It's quite common for baby birds to regress. Good for you for getting the formula! Birds can die very quickly from starvation, my Parrotlet did because the breeder assured me he wasn't weaned when he wasn't.

I really would like to emphasize how important socialization and exposure to different foods/items/environments are. You've read about the hormonal stage.. Birds that have seen and eaten and done everything as a youngster grows up to be a much mature and stable adult bird. It is very important that you harness train Lotto and tak him outside and introduce new people to him. Just like human kids, baby birds need to see and learn from the world.
