Caique + Senegal = ?

Postby Olga » Wed Sep 21, 2011 2:42 pm

We have a female baby caique and thinking about getting a 3yo Senegal.
We do not know the Senegal`s sex yet (is this really matter?)
There are different reasons for us to get a Senegal and one of them that they both will not be lonely while we are out of the house.

What can we expect? Can they be a friends? Share cage?
Or is this really depend on the bird?

Thanks in advance for all your comments!

It is very dependent on the bird but in general I'd say the Senegal Parrot would probably kill the Caique if put into the same cage or hate it with a passion if just kept in the same household. Absolutely do not get the Senegal with any rationale related to it being a friend for the Caique.

Thanks Michael! We used to have Senegal in the past as well. So I know a little what they can be. Most likely we`ll end up having two birds who do not tolerate each other :)

Seriously, be careful. Search back in this forum. Someone had a Senegal Parrot escape its cage and find its way into their other bird's and kill it. They are known to be mate killers even in their own species, all other species especially beware!

Actually in this case if one was to kill another, the Caique would probably do the killing - they are notorious about not getting along with other species and not a lot of birds get the way they play.

I agree with Natacha- Caiques are notorious for being completely bird-aggressive. Moreso than Senegals.

Ok, didn't know that aspect of Caiques. In that case it sounds like the most unlikely parrot companionship I've heard of.

Wow! Thanks again for such quick replies!
Having Senegal in the past and as a current caique owner I also agree that caique may actually kill other bird if she gets territorial or jealous.
Thanks!

Your best chance at a friend for your Caique, and of course this is never a guarantee, is another Caique. I know of a few people with two Caiques so that they have each other to play with.
