i feel like im not doing it right lol xD is it important to do this or will the feather break through on its own?

The feather will eventually break through on its own, since the bird will be scratching its head against something else if you don't have another bird to preen it. Also, bathing helps loosen the wax. Breaking the wax also releases pressure on the head and makes the parrot more comfortable in general.

However, the real reason we help our companion parrots break their pin feathers is to imitate a process called allopreening. This process is when another parrot preens the pin feathers for him, as he cannot reach his pin feathers himself. Essentially what this translates into is that you act as the companion of the parrot, which then builds and strengthens the owner-parrot relationship.

Personally, when I do it, I take the tip and twist. I haven't had issues with it so far.

How do you know if the pin feather is ready to. Have the wax broken? Will it be.a certain color or something?
