A question about taking my birdy out

Postby Svej » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:41 pm

I have a 6 month old lovebird and sometimes I wonder if he gets bored of being in my apartment all day, every day. I let him out of his cage every day so he can fly around and play, but he is still limited to my bedroom primarily. I also let him sit on my shoulder in the kitchen if I am not using the stove. So other than my bedroom and kitchen there isn't anywhere else for him to go (I have a hilariously small apartment.)

I was thinking to take him out in his carrier sometime in good weather. He's travelled a few times to other places and is good with trains/cars/subways/buses. And he seems to like looking around at everything - I cover most of his carrier so he can feel safe but he stays in the front where he can see. I can't take him out on a leash because he won't wear one and I live in a busy downtown area so there would be a million things to scare him away. In your experienced opinions, would it be beneficial to take him out in his carrier to see new things and break the apartment routine? Or would having to be confined to a carrier not be worth the outing for him?

Thanks for your advice.

I don't think it would hurt to take him outdoors in the carrier. If not for any other reason than for natural sunlight which is essential for vitamin D and calcium related functions. I would not advocate taking the bird out of the carrier outside for any reason.

Of course for parrots that can be harnessed, it's great socialization. But in your case, meeting new people/objects indoors is probably more beneficial than just sitting in a carrier outside when it comes to that.

Do you have friends you can take the bird to? Good friends would probably be willing to bird proof a room for you when you visit.
