Rory Tiel has gone - 2 weeks now

Postby Mum2rory » Fri Oct 07, 2011 8:16 pm

Hi All, It has taken me this long to post this as I have been very upset (can you tell???) Saturday, 2 weeks ago, my dog pushed the door open with his snout and my tiel flew out the door. I was less than a meter away but it happened so fast. The door was on the side of the house, Rory flew over the roof to the other side, by the time we (my son and I) got there he was gone. We have driven, walked, called, posted flyers, Parrotalert, etc but there has been no sign of him. We also had really bad weather for the next 5 days. Hubby, son and self are devasted. Rory was such a character and is sadly missed. I cannot bring myself to get another tiel, cos he wont be Rory. We will get another bird one day, its so sad seeing that empty cage and knowing this could have been avoided, my son wants to call it Rory (I said no) I had been doing indoor recall with Rory and it worked probably 90% of the time, but when it really counted, Rory would not come back.

Please dont criticise, I have done enough of that over the last 2 weeks to last a life time. Many tears have been shed over this, we are only now coming to terms with what happened. Thanks for listening. Please take every precaution when having your birdies out. I thought I did, never thought this would happen to me, I am so paranoid about when my birds are out, practised recall, doors closed AND locked and just one time it wasnt, my beloved Rory is gone.

:( I'm sorry, I can't even picture losing my sweet Tiel. I can understand how painful and especially haunting the experience would be. My only suggestion is- don't give up. He CAN come back. Keep the flyers going, post on Craigslist, call SPCA, even pay the radio? Put up classifieds in the newspaper, tell everyone you know... etc

Don't give up, you still have hope :)

I don't know if you've already done so, but you could offer a reward in your fliers. 1-200 dollar reward should be adequate for a cockatiel, and it is well worth it for you. I personally couldn't picture losing one of mine, either. Wish you the best of luck.

My heart won't allow me to think Rory RIP.

I have to think that he heard the call of a wild flock of cockatiels and joined them.

i am so sorry you lost your sweet tiel. i feel your pain. not a day goes by that i don't think of my IRN Bette who flew out the door august 17th. i miss her so much, i look for her everytime i leave the house, i scan the trees and porches. no sightings. i hate to even think of what happened to her. they are so innocent and trusting and to be thrown out into the unknown is unthinkable.
but it happens to the best of us. i never thought it would happen to me either.
i still have a glimmer of hope that she is still alive but its fading fast. there are too many hungry cats roaming the city streets. at least yours has a chance because there are other tiels in the wild?
plus you have a warm climate, the winter here will kill my Bette if she is not found.
i missed the sweet sounds of a bird in the house so i now have a pair of loveys, and i now hear the joyful noise filling my house again, but its not the same.
so my heart goes out to you as i understand your agony and all the "what ifs".
don't beat yourself up, it won't bring her back and you will just make yourself more miserable than you already are.
i am now just beginning to search for another IRN. it won't be my Bette but i will love it all the more as i know how precious they are and how things can change in the blink of an eye.
thinking of you.......

Ohh that's so sad :( I've lost a few Tiels out the door and the sight of them going still plays around my head. Do you have a pic of Rory? I can keep an eye out for you cause you're not too far from me. There's a grey tiel that lives in our valley and I'm certain he's an ex-pet, but he won't let me catch him and he's quite clearly safe out there. Never seen a flock of Tiels in the wild here so I doubt he heard a flock of Tiels. They seem to just see a door open and run for it, then get up high in the gums and can't get down. :(
If you need some Tiel love I have two here that would love cuddles.

Thanks Cheeky. I swoon over all the pics of Tiels. I even saw one in a pet shop the spitting image of rory (but this was a baby) I am not ready for another tiel just yet, but one day I will be. I recently re-homed a blue quaker that i saw advertised on Trading Post online. he looks like he has had a rough start to life. Its nice to 'see' you around here again, I do miss your posts.
