My sun is not social? Help please.

Postby dohcsvt » Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:55 pm

I have a sun conure that we have had for about 8 months. He will step up every time and gives kisses. I spend 10-15 minutes training him EVERY morning 7 days a week. He is very smart and seems to pick up on things fast. The problem is that as sonn as I try to take him away from his cage, like to the couch or to take a shower he flys right back to the cage. He will not sit on the couch with us. We have a stand in the kitchen that he eats lunch and supper on with us, but just will not sit and socialize. Any suggestions?

I would say... Take him to a small room where there is a perch, let him out, and remove the cage from sight. There, you can train him and have some real one on one without the cage there as an obstacle. That's what I did with my Budgie, and she freaked out a bit at first, but calmed down significantly after.

Also, I'd suggest harnessing/taking him outside in a carrier. Take him to parks, stores, streets, so he gets accustomed to new places. :)

Is Ollie social. If so use Ollie to teach Stanley. Give Ollie attention and fuss over him in front of Stanley. Stanley should get jeleouse and want involved.

Only recentlydid Myrtle leave the security of the sun room. She now flies behnd Rambo as he walks through the house. Of course Rambo is jeleouse that she can fly.

Try moving some of the training sessions to the areas where you want him to spend more time.

I do train him away from his cage, I forgot to mention that I train him in the sun room. He will leave his cage for training and for his meals, but not general socialization.

Ollie is very social, his cage is at one end of the couch and Stans is at the other. Ollie will sit on the couch and watch tv with us for hours, Stan sees him doing this including us giving Ollie lots of attention, but Stan just does not seem to care...I dunno why?

I may try to train him in front of the couch, but I am afraid that since he is so close to his cage he may fly to the cage instead of "going to school"

I would just like to thank everyone for thier input and I will update.

Don't worry about him flying back. Use it to teach him what you want. If he flies back to his cage go get him and tell him "not yet" or something like that. Start out keeping him on the sofa for 5 minutes and every time he flies back go and get him. As soon as he can do 5 minutes with out flying back, up the time.
It works best if you can inhibit the behaviour. In other words look for signs he is about to take off and distract him.
When your session is over ask him if he wants to go back and then take him to his cage.

Make sure the cage door is shut and keep some tasty bird snacks on hand to make the couch fun.

This is how my GCC and Sun are, too. One just wants to be with you, and doesn't really play with toys. The other loves toys and always wants to get back to her cage.

Go to your Sun Room with your whole family. Then sit criss-cross in the floor then say step up and when he does pass him to the person beside you and repeat this for about 15-20 mins and he should get the idea that he should be social. :D

I went back in your postings. You have had Ollie longer and he is a cudler. Stan is more recent and he is the learner but not social.

You have two kids with different personalities that's all. Just because they are together doesn't mean they are going to be the same. Ollie is just more needy than Stan who is more independant.
