Bird baths

Postby wordpainter7 » Wed Oct 19, 2011 5:51 pm

I hope this is in the right section... Anyway, I've noticed that my green cheek hates water with a passion. I've seen her take a bath once or maybe twice in her water dish but even then she only got her head wet. I bought her the Poop Off misting bottle and left in it her cage for her to get used to it. After about two weeks I tried spraying it up in the air and walking through it, loudly expressing my satisfaction, and then I sprayed it up a little closer to her- and I ended up with a screaming, terrified bird firmly embedded in my arm. A couple days and several bandaids later, I filled a shallow pan with water and tried lightly splashing her, to basically the same results.
So should I keep pushing it? I let it go then but now she is molting and I want her feathers to be healthy and I know bathing helps with that. Does anyone have reccomendations on any feather care sprays? Also, I'm her first home and can't imagine anything traumatic that would keep her away from water. Did I introduce the misting bottle incorrectly?
Thanks!

Put her in the kitchen sink and use the sprayer on her. Very low force, and semi warm water. Maxx LOVES this, and since he is molting he gets a bath every day.

Try installing another, larger water dish in her cage and let her decide when and if she wants to use it. Try leaving a tea cup saucer out in her play area with just enough water in it to wet her feet. Use her favorite treat to encourage her to walk into/across a wet surface, or shallow plate. If all else fails you can setup a humidifier for her room. The only caution with a humidifier is that you need to find one manufactured without non-stick materials. Above all be patient; some behavioral changes take months.

Take her on a small perch into the bathroom with you when you bathe/shower. Do everything slowly, and be prepared to calm her if she becomes frightened. Do everything in small stages and allow her to react and/or adjust. Take proper toilet and mirror precautions (closed and covered). Don't use heavily scented soap, or shampoo for yourself when she's in the room with you.

If you have a friend with a bird you can have yours observe the other one bathe. If my roommate's budgie is scared of something, it only has to watch my irn play with it to try it out.
