Hotel with parrot in lobby

Postby arnoldus » Tue Nov 08, 2011 9:19 pm

I recently stayed at a hotel which had a Grey in the lobby area. The cage looked a bit small and dull comparing to what I've read here and on other sites that is needed.
(not my pic)

I talked a bit with the manager, he said the parrot is from the owner and had been in different hotel lobbys for over 30 years. It could talk, but else wasn't very active. I talked with it a little, and I saw several guests doing it as well, so it has daily interaction, but is never allowed out of it's cage. No plucking observed.

After such a while in that situation, is it possible the bird gets used to the situation and likes the daily interaction, is of stable behaviour?
Is this mistreatment of the animal, or acceptable albeit suboptimal?

I am sure after 30 years it has resigned itself to it's fate. It is far from right. The attention of the people is it's only comfort. I only saw one toy in that cage and no room to move around for exersize. Lack of exersize makes it lathargic and it just doesn't care anymore.

It can be called a form of abuse but there is nothing that can be done if it is clean and has food and water.

It is a shame that it does not at least have a new toy now and then. I don't think it would play with it but it would be something new to think about.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where some people treat animals as ornaments. They are just there to look good. I totally disagree with animals being treated as ornaments and people buying them just so they look good,

Reading this post made me very, very sad. That grey must be bored to flipping death. I feel so sorry for it, the owner should at last provide it with some toys.

I agree.
There are some birds who are closed away in bedrooms and forgotten. One person said he found a parrot in someones basement dirty and hungry without light. If the breeding would stop for about 3 years those parrots would be sold at a good price to someone who would love and care for them.
The one in the hotel had to be ke[pt clean and fed because it was on display. It at least had the enrichment of different people giving it attention verbally. It is not right to just put them on display but he seems to have resigned himself to his fate which is a lot better than some have to suffer.
If I knew the address of the hotel I would send a toy with a mirror in it.

I just googled "hotel african grey parrot lobby" and was surprised at the number of hotels that have parrots in the lobby. Some are in tropical places like Puerto Rico where you could kind of understand it as being part of the ambience, but I also found hotels in Finland and Delaware that had parrots on display.

As long as the bird has enough room to exercise and toys to play with, I don't see a problem. In fact, the birds would probably enjoy being in a busy place with a lot of people giving it attention. The bird in this picture, though, clearly needs a more enriched environment.

I'm afraid to say that the cage pictured is too small for a bird like an african grey. There will always be those people who put birds in cages too small and we should try to stop them. I recommend that you should talk to the manager again and tell him this as the bird won't have enough space to fly around.

Your rose colored glasses
are tinted too dark. I am grateful that the bird is in view of many people. Because of this you know he is being kept clean and well fed. He is probably entertained by the visitors as much as he entertains them. He is in a controlled environment and well lighted. I'm pretty sure that at least one parrot person a day takes time to communicate with him. The person who cleans and feeds him has physical contact. You can't clean a cage without that. He is probably put on the top and talked to while it is being done.

I have known mothers who don't want their kids to go outside and get dirty and germy. Then I have known other mothers who tell their kids to go out and play and not dirty the house. If they get thirsty they have to drink from the garden hose.

Save your enegy for those who really need help. Educate as many people as possible. You may teach someone who teaches someone else who know a parrot in need.
