Yoshi The Budgie 15/11 2011

Postby Hannes » Tue Nov 15, 2011 3:08 pm

Hey again!

So, we've had Yoshi for about 5 months now, and I thought I'd make a little update and ask a few questions to you all.

a day in Yoshi's life:

Around 8 am, our kids are up, breakfast is cooking and our day begins. Around this time we take Yoshi out and give him his first meal.
When the kids are of to school, we put him on a play branch in our office where he preens, chirps, naps. Sometimes he flies to his cage in the other room to drink, nap, our bite on a toy we've got haning in there.

When he gets hungry again, he usually flies to us, and tells us he's hungry...usually we wait a while, just to give the food on our terms, but sometimes we give it to him when he wants. This is usually around midday.

After that he wants to go back to his play branch, and he can fly now, so he does. He plays, chirps, preens, stretches and naps there again. We go to him and talk to him, real close, and he has no problems with that, and when he chirps and we are working by the computer, we talk to him aswell.

he flies back and forth from the perch to our desks, chairs, shoulders during the day. When the kids come home, we do dinner and around 6-7 pm we spend some time by the tv and he gets his dinner aswell. We have his cage in the living room, so during the evening he is either in it or on top of it, chirping, singing as we are watching tv and talking.

He spends his days out of the cage, the cage door is open during the day, and we close it when we go to bed.

Now, he doesn't play that much with the toys, he likes his branch alot, talks to it, picks with his beak on it etc. He doesn't seek close interaction, but if we leave the room, he calls for us, but seems content with sitting 1-2 meters away from us.

He seems to have bonded more with me -> he doesn't bite me when i come to take him, sometimes in the mornings, he can sit on me while i "wake up", or if i take a nap during the day, i can put him on my chest and he naps with me. I talk to him alot, making budgie sounds aswell as normal smooch-talk.

To the questions:

Any comments on his day? Out time, feed time? should we have him in the cage too, with the door closed, just to show him we are in charge?

Playtime - should we take him to a room, close the door and play with him with his toys, or things he is curious about? (If we take him and play with him he usually flies back to his branch shortly after...)

How do we get him to want to be with us, close, seek our company more intimate?

general tips on how to improve our bonding?

He is not comfortable with our hands, every time i approach him, he checks where my hands are, and if i take them close to him to fix a toy etc he thins up, eyeballs my every move except when he wants to go somewhere, or i come to pick him up (however he can nap on my hand and finger, and if i have them around him for a while he sort of calms down). I can be close with my face. He doesn't like to be touched, opens his beek, makes a sound like "no i dont want to, get your hand away from me"

There u have it i think, plz comment, give tips and if u feel like it, answer the questions i had.

cheers!

Sounds like he hit his "terrible twos" a little early.
Myrtle did it and is just starting to come out of it. For a while she was just too busy adventuring and learning to have time for me. During this time I made her step up. I would talk to her and tell her she was pretty and then put her back where she was. This kept us close and let her know that I didn't want that much of her time when she was so busy.

the twrrible twos u say. What in what i wrote lead u to that conclusion? If u dont mind :), plz elaborate.

Any other suggestions, tips on the questions i had? i know there is alot of info already written, i guess i basically want to hear that "this is normal" "they behave like this once they become more comfortable around u and the new surroundings" :)

we've had him for 5 months so he is around 9-10 months i'd say.

Well, any tips on the Q's i had are mor than welcome.

Cheers!

To bond with Ladu, my cockatiel, I usually get some toys and I just sit on the sofa with the toys in my lap, then we play with them together(he chews them up and I move them about so he has to walk over to get them) he loves this game :D it also helps to bond bu feeding treats from your hand, they love this.

Thank you for your inputs.

We'll do some bonding activities with him, to get more close.

Cheers!
