Showering

Postby WVUSAE » Mon Nov 21, 2011 3:21 pm

I know some people take their birds with them in the shower to enjoy the mist. I turned my shower so it was warm (cold for my taste but i wanted to see what they'd do). They sat on my shoulder and the warm mist got on them. A behavior I saw in Mr Crackers was he walked to the end while I was rinsing my hair and he opened his wings and got under the water. I'm fairly certain he walked to be near the water and opened his wings. Jane just accepted the water (I used my hand as a shield to let it just be little bits of water go through). Anything atypical here? I'm just curious since it was their first time they didn't freak out or fly away.

Sounds like they liked it =)!
I think it was good that you gradually introduced the water in the way that you did, that way it wasnt an instant shock. I got a suggestion though, there are shower handles/nozzles with a "mist function" that are really cheap (mine was 9$) and they are well worth it, as the mist can be sprayed directly at the bird. Me and Stitch both shower with the mist function and its great :) ! Showering does wonders for his feathers.

Sadly, both of my birds are not keen on showering. I think that your guys sound like they enjoy it. Good luck!

Puppy, my Senegal loves to perch on the shower curtain rod and enjoy the mist.
I don't let him down into the flow of water though since the force of the water is too great.

I have a shower perch. I aim the shower head so it only sprays on the end of the perch so they can get in and out of the flow and I can have the rest of the shower.

I had Rambo on the perch one day while I was washing my hair there was an awful racket behind me.
Myrtle had been goofing off on the curtain rod and fell in. I had to get the shampoo out of my eyes and found her flipping around in the water on the floor of the shower.

I wish my birds would do so. How did you start on taken them with you in the shower. I have a shower perch, I positioned it outside the shower for time being and always take one bird with me, just looking. Unfortunately, when there is water in the game, not a chance. I will try in the bath now, and position the perch there. I will let some water in, put one bird on the perch and see what happens over a time. Maybe that is better.

Not all birds like to bathe the same way. The species of the bird matters, too. An amazon might think nothing about taking a shower with you, but the size of the water droplets could be painful to a budgie. My friend's cockatiel like to sit on your finger while you gently mist him with a spray bottle. Lots of people's birds prefer to splash around in a small bowl. Some birds like to run back and forth under a thin stream of water in the sink. Some like catching the mist off your back in the shower. Try different ways and see what your bird likes. Make sure you offer treats and don't force the bird if they really don't like it. You don't want them to become phobic of water or distrusting of you.
