Over bonding?

Postby AbtZooGirl » Tue Nov 22, 2011 12:40 pm

Well here goes my first question since I've returned...

We've got Max, a GCC. He can be the sweetest little guy to my husband, but to me he will no longer even follow a step up command. I have been wondering if I am doing something my husband isn't. Max has always been a little nippy, but lately he grabs me and holds on and it is very painful. This last time he didn't get a chance to draw blood but I came away with a bit of a shredded finger. I have read where some parrots take to one person more than others... and see "the other woman" as a threat. (Although we're pretty sure Max is a boy) Either way.. I guess I'd like some advice on this. Should my husband spend less time with him so that Max and I can bond better? What are your thoughts?

I don't know the full story, but it seems that Max is attatched to one person. Your husband and you need to basically 're-train' him together. He needs to get used to you as a nice caring person. Once Max sees that then slowly you spend time with him alone. Don't let your husband spend LESS time or Max (not now but in future) may become emotionally sad because your husband doesn't play with him as much.

Good luck and remember to re-tame/train!

An update on Max and I...

I now approach Max with more caution. I look at him to check out any signs of stress, excitement, etc.. I let him calm down a minute or two and talk to him sweetly before I ask him to step up.. No bad bites since trying this method.. My husband is still definitely preferred but he lets me get in a scritch or two a day so I can handle that :D :gcc:
