Changing temperatures.. advice pls :-)

Postby Pink Phoenix » Fri Dec 02, 2011 2:28 am

Hi there, Just wanted a little advice...

I'm thinking of getting Marty a large outdoor cage with a roof and this will be kept in the shade...at the moment he lives in a good sized cage and I put him out in the day and bring him in at night... its getting to summer here in Australia and its around 35 degrees in the day...

Will my lovie be ok with temperature changes... hot and muggy in day and cool at night. And when seasons change it can get pretty nippy here some days and very cold at night!

Any help will be appreciated! :swaying:

If you get a large cage just go out there and spray Marty every now and then with some water so that he doesn't get too hot. 35 is really hot in general about 21-25 Celsius is good for a parrot. Michael has an outdoor aviary and he kept his parrots out there during the day over the summer and in his video he just says that he will spray them so that they don't heat up too much. Oh and make sure you still bring it inside during the night :P

Hope this helped :)

You might try researching the climate where your specific kind of love bird originated to see if that kind of temperature would be comparable.

Wikipedia mentions there are feral flocks of lovebirds in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, and daytime temperatures average over 35C there for six months out of the year (they can occasionally reach 50C). I can't imagine the lovebirds there are active during the hottest hours of the day. You'd want to be sure your aviary had plenty of shade and water available at all times.

First of all, great that you want to give him a chance to be outside. I don't think the temperatures will be that big of a deal, as long as you provide him with lots of shade, a lot of space to move around in and many opportunities to cool off.

More importantly though, please get him a friend of his own species. It is not a good idea to keep a parrot, a very social species of parrot at that, alone the majority of the day, outside or inside.

Good luck!

I want to get him a friend but my partner is not keen... I believe that if you keep birds you should give them as much attention as you can, let them in to fly around, play and spend time with you... my partner says if I get another one he does not want them in the house at all as they will be even noisier than just having one. So basically if i get another one they will live outside, and never come inside... I just don't see the point in keeping birds if you cant spend time with them.

Bit sad that i'm 'not allowed' really isn't it! :-(

Do you have any possibility of building an outdoor cage/aviary that's a bit bigger?
That way they will have space to fly around, and you can just go in there and hang out with them, train etc, instead of bringing the bords in. I know many people that keep birds that way, due to allergies and other reasons. I bet your little guy would like that. :)
Although i can see your dilemma. I've been lucky enough to find a partner with his own crazy interests which means none of us can complain. :P

There is not too much room for a big aviary, plus only renting the place, and here it needs to be double door/security door aviary by law.

Yeah would be good to have one big enough to hang out in... just sad I would prob spend most of my time in the bird cage then in the house lol... maybe i could set up a sofa and tv in there! ;-)

Feel like I'm treated like a little kid sometimes... and I'm nearly 30 lol :swaying:

PS. But it doesn't matter that i'm bothered about his dog s******g in the house at least twice a week!

Keep the bird - get him a friend - get rid of the partner.
