Where did you get your parrot?

Postby trademark » Sat Dec 10, 2011 1:54 pm

I'm deciding between a white eyed conure, blue crowned conure, or cape parrot. I have been around and even handled these species at several parrot stores. I want to buy from a breeder though, preferably parent raised but socialized, and almost all the sites I have visited have retired or don't breed these species, especially white eyed conure. If you have any of these species and bought them from a breeder, can you give me the link?

I know a good person who sells conures many different species.

How can you go from conures (200-500) to a cape parrot which is like (1200-2000).
Great if you can, check kijiji and make sure if you will buy a cape buy from a Breeder. I can never trust pet stores. Where do you live btw?

I got my Meyers parrot Saga from a breeder when I was twelve, and my Eleonora Cockatoo Yondo from a breeder when I was fifteen... I would never do it again though, as the parrot breeding industry/aviculture is something I would never want to support. When I did it in the past, I had no idea what it really was.

My Lesser Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Egon and Scarlet Macaw are rehomes, and they are/were just as nice (if not more) than the "hand-fed babies" from the breeders.
Plus, I gave unwanted birds a home, instead of just filling the pockets of breeders and simply getting myself what I want. ;)
Proud slave of Saga and Cirino, and missing Yondo and Egon.

I'm from San Diego. There are alot of parrot stores around here but not very many breeders or rescues that I've heard of. And yes, the price for a conure is a lot less than a cape, but after researching them especially in this forum, they seem very close to perfect for me, and price would just be a number [maybe not right away :) ] there also seems to be many rescues in like sacramento and northern CA. Thats pretty far and I don't know if i can make time to go so far several times- not to mention gas

Here is a pet store on Ventura Blvd. I have never been there but it is in Southern CA and it also has Capes and rescues available as well. Just from their web site it seems nice but of course you chould always check things out for your self.

The rescue has a Half Moon Conure. If I was into getting another bird right now I'd love to have her. Disney could have a female friend. But No other birds for me right now.
There is also this place http://www.theperfectparrot.com/ I have never been there either so you'd have to check it out yourself. There is also a bird store in San Diego posted on another thread you could check out. I don't remember the name or know much about it except it is in San Diego,

Craigslist and a Bird Fair. I don't really have any moral standing about buying from a breeder whatsoever. I feel that I am making a commitment to spend my life with the bird, and if I want one from since she was a baby, it's in my right to have one.

I feel the same! There are some great breeders around here (my best friend got her cockatiel from a breeder) and in my experience, some of the nicest, most emotionally-stable birds are straight from the breeder. We all know that pet store birds can be very untame at best, and while rescuing is a great thing to do, I admit I personally have some... anxieties about it. I'm a musician (planning to make most of my living by music) and the last thing I need is for an aggressive rescue to injure me. I know the amount of damage is relative to the size of the bird, but I'd rather not risk having a troubled rescue bird that could end my career - even temporarily.
