please help i dont know what to do anymore

Skeeter is my sunconure. this will be the third year i have had him. I love him soo much and i mean we have had our little problems but for the most part its been no big deal. Recently about a week ago he started screaming constantly. when i wake up and take him out he will start screaming. whenever i ask him to step up he will either fly away or bite me. its almost like a battle to get him back in his cage now and it reallly breaks my heart. He acts like hes scared of everything and always on the edge. when i finally manage to get him back in the cage after i play with him for a long time as soon as i close the door he starts panicking and screaming. i just cleaned his cage and put a lot of new toys in and he wont even touch them. i fed him grapes this morning and he barely touched them. i don't know what to do. oh and another thing he does is he will fly somewhere like his cage and he will stat flapping his wings and he just does it for like a minute or two. I really don't know what to do anymore this is seriously breaking my heart. please help me. do you think if i bought him a bigger cage it would help?? (he is almost 3)

The bigger the cage the better.

Rambo is in season and making us crazy. He makes such awful noises. Myrtle doesn't understand and is making his noises too.

They are both very sociable and have all the freedom they could want but that doesn't stop them from trying to make me crazy.

Maybe he wants a mate? He might be in season and when they are, they call for a mate by screaming and not socialising with their owner. If you have enough money and space for a mate for him, then maybe it would be best to buy a mate for him so they can live together, although it means he may not socialise with you as much, at least he will be happy with his mate. I'm not really sure, I'm just guessing. Hopefully someone who knows more on this subject can help you.

He could be in season. It must be awful for them.

With Rambo I just talk to him more and give him extra vegies to keep him busy.

He may just want a little more freedom.

I know this didn't help much but I'm thinking as hard as my old brain will go.

Unless the cage really is TOO small, I wouldn't go changing that right now if he's freaking out from things. Most likely it sounds like he's just going through "terrible twos" stage. It happens when they hit maturity and then keeps coming back from time to time.

I wouldn't entirely rule out illness or injury. He could be internally hurt (like busted a rib falling down when you weren't home or something like that). If he's not eating, runny droppings, losing weight, etc then take him to the vet immediately. If you think he's prefect healthwise (eating normally, normal weight, full motion, not staying still a lot), then it may not be the reason.

If you're sure he doesn't have any kind of health issue, I would actually consider reducing his food a bit. Of course remember to follow appropriate measures (discussed elsewhere) by monitoring weight and food quantity. But if he's just being hormonal then less food will do two things:

1) He'll be more motivated to do treat reinforced behaviors (with and without treats)
2) The hormonal drive should subside a bit during a food deficit or return to normal feeding

My parrots definitely get more bossy and weird when they get too much food. Of course they need the extra nutrition for molts and stuff. So I freefeed them when I'm away on vacations or too busy to spend a lot of time with them. But when I go back to normal, they are back on a somewhat restricted twice daily diet. One way to reduce the diet safely is to feed more vegetables and less pellets. They fill up quicker on veggies while gaining less calories/nutrition. Also watch he's not getting too much nuts/seeds as treats. Less food means he'll be more motivated for treats but that doesn't mean give him way too many treats. Instead break them into smaller pieces or make him do more to earn the bigger ones.

My senegal is just over one year old and she has her first period like this too.
She will clap her wings for about a minute or so and tries to give me the food.
Looks like your sunconcure is in the same position but.....make sure that he isnt ill like michael said.

I know someone (not to scare you) who had a perfectly healthy parrot, who had a tia during the night and he became halfway blind. They never noticed, because she kept acting normal, but within a few days she got a second one, making her completely blind and the owner found her at the bottom of the cage, not knowing what happined. She got scared and bit him so hard, he almost lost a finger, eventhough she had never bit before.

What i want to say is, if she/he acts strange, it could be from being sexually mature, but if she is biting, and other strange things like supposed to be scared, it may be she has fallen down and is in pain somewere.
So if you can, make sure at first she isnt hurt in any way and take her to a vet.
If she isnt, then she'll get over it anytime soon, just the way micheal says.
I have to change the diet aswell for two of my birds, being in this state right now.

good luck
