Proper Exercise for Senegal

Postby Wayne361 » Tue Jan 03, 2012 12:31 pm

Hello....trying to research the topic but have a concern. My senegal "oscar" is out of his cage and interacting with myself or family members for about 5 or 6 hours per day which i have found is plenty (based on my research), but wonder if he is getting the proper amount of exercise. Oscar is a free flighted bird but I think he is either extremely cautious or lazy...possibly a combination of the two, because he seldom flies. He will fly if he wants something (which may partially answer my own question) but generally prefers to walk, climb or sit. Just wondering if Oscar should be "forced" to fly more often in order for him to get enough exercise or is he getting enough through our daily activity. Looking out for the best interest of Oscar and want him to continue to be a family member for as long as possible.

Thanks for any responses,

Wayne

Recall training, and making sure all resources are not in the same place. Plenty of different foraging trees, toys disperesed around the house, etc. :)
Also they tend to move around a lot more when you house two or more birds together.

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. I also realize that many parrots are clipped and have no option of flight but still remain healthy throughout their lives. Knowing this gave me comfort, but I will research flight training and commence that as well.

Well the thibg with clipped birds is most of them learn how to use their legs and can be pretty fast runners. But yeah recall training would be good.
RIP Bo. your epicness lives on in all budgies :D
