Postby nikii » Fri Jan 06, 2012 4:28 pm

hi everyone,
just wanna ask how much cover is important for parrot?
my jojo hates cover n he always puffed his fur every time he see me holding his cover.
its 2 days now he prefer to sleep outside of his cage n of course, without cover.
is it ok for him??for mental n his health??

hello, it depends on what kind of room the bird is in, if it's a quiet room that's dark it's fine. i have a greencheeck who sleeps in his cage in a bed, while my cockatoo would rather sleep in my room with me on the curtain rod. the foster home i got her from did not cover any of his birds and they were all very happy and healthy.

I'd have the bird sleep in the cage for security reasons.

As to whether or not it needs to be covered, that's relative, as the above posted mentioned.

If the bird is in a common area like a living room and there might still be activity after it's bed time, then yes, I'd cover the cage. If the sleeping happens in a different quiet and dark room, then no, it's not necessary.

My boys have their own bedroom with a timed light that comes on a 7 am and goes off at 9 pm, so they don't have covers on their cages. I just close the curtain to block out the nearby street light and close the door so they aren't disturbed by me and they're all good.

I don't cover my birds. It is a personal choice I made. I don't see any reason to cover them. I don't think covering them is mean either. It's like choosing between water bowls and water bottles, a personal preference. My birds don't like being covered but that is probably because they are not used to it. Squeaky hisses very loudly.

I have never heard that it matters much one way or the other. See which your bird prefers and go from there.

What if she woke up, ended up in bed with you and you rolled over? I've heard to many horror stories of people falling asleep with their parrots and ending on top of their parrots, killing them.

What if something were to happen to spook them? What if there was a fire? Much easier to take out a bird out of a cage to put in a carrier than to try and run after one that might have already flown from one place to the other.

there is always someone up, i'm not saying it's what everyone should do my boyfriend is up all night. she won't fall into my bed she flies it would be the same if there was a fire during the day when they're both out.she hates her cage i don't think she was ever aloud out before she was surrendered, she goes insane when the door is closed and does a o.c.d. motion over and over, and pulls her feathers out.
