AntiSocial Ekky

Postby drif » Tue Jan 10, 2012 7:45 am

I got a puppy about two months ago and since then my ekky has been acting antisocial. When it's her out of cage time I will go over and open up the top door to the play area and nine times out of ten she will walk over to the door and slide it closed then go back to her 'observation perch' inside the cage. She has choosen to not come out of the cage at all for about two weeks now. This started right after I brought the dog home. At first she would come out for a few minutes then go back in but now she will not choose to come out of the cage. If I take her out she wants to go right back in.

This is the only thing that changed. She is still eating like a pig, preeneing herself, and vocalizing exactly the same as she has always done. No ruffled/puffy feathers or weight changes. Has anyone else experienced something like this or know how long the adjustment period takes? I've seen her take a month to acclimate to a new toy so I expected some changes.

No kid wants a sibling, I expect Stitch to have a phase of irritation when we introduce him to Leroy.
The puppy is stealing time from your ekkie that she considers his. Make sure to spend a lot of time with her and show her that you love her as much as the new puppy.

Female Ekkies can be reallu independent. She's just taking her time, she'll come out when she wants to. I wouldn't worry.

This is why socialization is very important. Parrots NEED be socialized regularly to different surroundings, people, animals, schedules so that they grow up to be a stable animal. I would suggest you take her outside regularly to outings in a carrier or a harness :)
